Now on to the main issue, with that money I'm looking at spending all of it on a body. I want to move away from Sony as building a collection means tying yourself to a brand and I'd much rather be tied to Canon or Nikon. Despite looking at a Nikon d90 for the longest time, I think I'm going to go for a Canon EOS 550D. I know many people with Canon SLR's so it'll make borrowing lens more easy for me, plus I've used many Canon products before and I'm happy with their build quality.

The main thing I take photos of are vehicles. I went to a trackday the other day with a load of friends. I only had my a200 and a 18-70mm kit lens, I managed to get some 'ok' shots but I had to crop the photos massively as 70mm is way too small for this work.
Here's an ok shot I managed to grab.

I'm hoping to be able to capture photos like

or

.

Since I'm pretty settled on the 550D, I'm now looking at glass and I'm quite confused really. There are several 55-200mm Tamron's and similar available for around £100-£200, but I've heard people saying that at 200mm the photos are just blurred or 'soft'. Is the only option for this kind of work to buy from the expensive Canon L-series range such as this?

Also, I've been told 2x converters are useful but they double the f stop? Would this be ok for my line of photos though (outdoors, generally well lit).

Any help or guidance in general about what to buy and tips on photographing motorsport would be appreciated. I'd like to keep things fairly lightweight as I travel to all these events by motorbike so they have to be in a backpack WELL wrapped up in case I fall.

Thanks,

Dan

Oh one more thing, I realise I have to wait 60 days and get x posts to sell my gear, but can't I look in the forum to buy before that?
