I've joined because the forum has been repeatedly recommended to me as a hotbed of tips and info to develop my photography skills.
I'm very much a keen amateur, I've been using point and shoot digital cameras for a few years, the last couple in particular I've been really trying to improve my results through better lighting and composition both for my own enjoyment, and to showcase my portfolio of work. I'm a professional car detailer, so capturing the results of my work is important to me, as well as enjoyable when working on rare and exotic examples.
I've been wanting a D-SLR for a long time and the opportunity to buy a secnd hand, but actually unused Canon 400d for a bargain price meant I couldn't resist.
I've been spending quite a lot of time reading about basic principles, then trying to put them into practice. However, I'm sure reading the forum will offer a much wider knowledge base.
I'll be careful to read and search before asking dopey questions!
