hi folks

Been lurking for a while trying to read up on DSLRs as I want to get one to photograph our young baby in the hope of getting better pictures than with the compact.

Seems to be a wealth of knowledge here and I apologise in advance for all teh stupid questions coming your way :D

Cheers
Allan

Hi Allan. Welcome to TP. Whereabouts are you from? I got a DSLR to photograph my son originally and I love it now. It's a good incentive to get better to get better shots of your LO!

Do you have your eye on any camera in particular? I have a canon and I must say my favourite lens to snap my son with is my "nifty fifty" (50mm f/1.8). It's particularly good in low light (eg soft play centres, sensory room, etc).

hi babs - thanks for the welcome.

I'm in Edinburgh. Just agreed to buy a second hand Canon 1000D off the forums so hopefully that will be a good starting point. I've been lurking while trying to figure out what to get and decided to just take the plunge when I found something that had good reivews and was in budget, which is what I've just done.

Now I've got to get my hands on it and figure out how to take half decent photos before we go on holiday in 10 days time (may take the compact as back up :D )

Hi Allan,

I hear the 1000D is a good camera. My friend has one and she produces some great shots. How old is your little one? Is this his/her first holiday? I'd be inclined to say leave your P&S at home and just take your new camera. It's a good incentive to learn how to use it ;) But that said, I know how important those "first holiday" shots are!

I'm sure you'll pick it up in no time. A good book for the basics is "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Paterson. It's excellent for explaining about ISO, exposure, f-stops and aperture.

yup first real outing apart from staying at the grand parents and we're goinng for 2 weeks in a caravan.. He's 6 months old on sunday gone. Biggest problem I've got is lack of time -very busy at work and he's not much of a sleeper, very happy most of the time though thankfully. Doesn't leave much time for reading though :)

Will be picking camera up tomorrow hopefully.

I remember that feeling! My son is 17 months now. It does get easier ... in some respects ;)

Hi Allan

Welcome to TP from up the road.

We've a baby due anytime now (a ten year old and a two year old already) so understand your time issues !

lots of our friends and family have kids so we knew what we were letting ouselves in for, but thanks for the reassurance..... :D

thinking of trying to join local library before we go away on the off chance i get time to read up on photography basics.

Thanks Phil - good luck on the impending arrival!

Welcome to TP Allan

Keep an eye on the meet up forum as we occasional have meets in and around Edinburgh

I'm in West Lothian myself

Hi Allan
Welcome to the forum!
Congratulations on the new camera, oh and baby too!
I agree with the others, just take your DSLR. 50mm is great for portraits and reasonably cheap too.
Enjoy your break!

Thanks for the nice welcome everyone

Going to have to make do with the kit lens for a while before thinking about extras but hopefully I can manage to improve on the results from the compact with that.
