Hi there, I thought I would join up and say hi. Im richard from Kent, near ashford.

Compared to a lot of you Im very new to this game. Ive finished a film degree so have been making short films for a while but have been spending more and more time behind a stills camera.
At this point in time I dont have anything decent, only an old fujifilm finepix 6000 which I guess you would class as a prosumer(sp) camera.

Ive been looking at DSLRs for a while now and thinking about which to get. I am drawn to the canon cameras since I use a Canon XL1 DV camera for filming. The model that im most interested in as the Canon 400D.

I spent a few mins in Jessops playing around with one and it feels good but im still undecided since money is always going to be an issue

I have managed to get a number of pictures on the internet using one of those free hosting places, one that doesnt seem to suck all that much. If its aloud to give external links please go over to http://freewebs.com/rgrebby
I would be interested in what people think of the pictures on there, but please bare in mind im not using a camera thats even close to top of the range.

Hello :)

The camera is just a tool (though nice tools can make the job more fun!) . You could always but a used DSLR as the difference between current and older models is not like it is with compacts.

I had a quick look at your pictures. You obviously have an eye for a composition. All the pictures seemed dark to me. That may be what you intended. If not it might be worth checking your monitor calibration.

it always seems that when I shoot at the perfect level ( as stated by the meter in the camera) the pictures seem over exposed and the colours look washed out. So I lower the settings and shoot darker. Although I do have to admit I like contrast.

Hi and welcome

Welcome, you certainly have a good eye and that’s moor important than all the gear you could ever buy, the camera is just a tool to create your vision. Look at what the pioneers of photography crafted and look at what they did it with, never blame the camera, you are in the driving seat.
