Hi everyone!

I'm Tom, I'm 27 and recently got interested in photography. For Xmas my girlfriend noticed the photography book on my Amazon wishlist and got it for me.

So have been reading that, but had no camera until 6 days ago, when I finally was able to get the Sony A200 I'd been after for ages (still a poor student despite my age!).

So I finally have a camera but am already getting a bit frustrated; I knew I wasn't going to be a natural but would have fun trying but am already getting frustrated at the limitations of my 18-70mm kit lens.

However, hopefully over time I'll improve and I look forward to badgering you all with my questions and maybe one day answering a question or two myself (in 10-15 years!).

Anyway - hello. :)

Hiya Tom, welcome aboard :)

Can't say I'm familiar with the Sony camera or therefore the lenses so can't really help you sorry, maybe your manual or a specialised book can offer more details on getting more out of the kit lens. I would have imagined the package being quite a good one as if it's anything like the nikon d40X and the 18mm - 55mm kit lens then you should be able to get quite a bit of functionality out of it.

Hi Tom,
Welcome to TP!!

As you said in my thread i'm sure we'll learn alot from these guys, and now i have another newbie to compare my progress with!

Hi Tom, welcome to TP.

I recently got the A350 with the 18-50mm kit lens and felt limited.

All I can say is persevere and you'll be amazed at the results this lens can give you.

There is also a sub forum for Sony Alpha users who can also give you a lot of useful advice.

Welcome aboard.

Hi and welcome to the forum from another newbie (both in forum and photography terms).

My advice (for what its worth) would be to stick with the kit lens in the meantime until you find your feet with the camera.

I recently purchased a Nikon D40 and had the same initial frustrations and immediately forked out for an 70-300mm lens. I then found that the majority of my photos were taken using the kit 18-55mm lens!!

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Col

Welcome Tom - stick with it.
Don't fall into the trap od seeking loads of kit right from the start.

Pick your subjects to suit the lens.

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the warm welcome and the encouragement and tips. I look forward to hopefully proving you all right! :)
