Hello everyone. I've been interested in general photography for many years but have only ever owned compacts and more recently a Panasonic FZ38 bridge camera (well that's the other half's). The Panasonic is a brilliant camera for what it is but its limitations (or mine) got me itching to get sharper, clearer more vivid pictures. I started hunting around for an entry level DSLR and after wading through so many options, I ended up purchasing a Nikon D5200 with a 50mm F1.8 lens.

I must say I am very pleased with this camera! I was expecting to have to learn quite a few more things in order to use the nikon over the bridge camera, but to be honest it has been a bit overwhelming. I have now had the D5200 about 2 weeks and I'm starting to get the hang of the different modes etc, it's all fun, but LOADS to learn :) My only regret is perhaps not getting a kit zoom lens with VR rather than the 50mm, but I can add that to my xmas list ? haha

I have been told by a few people that I will eventually find my niche, or what I am best at/enjoy the most (as in what i prefer to photograph) but at the moment I have no idea. I am just starting to snap anything and everything, most of the time it has turned out rubbish, which was expected. It is great fun though and I hope to learn some things from you guys :)

A little about me, my names Norman, I live near Sunderland/Durham, work in IT. I enjoy watching sports esp. Football (SAFC ;)) oh and photographing random things for now lol

Nice to meet you all!

Hi Norman, welcome! :D

Also welcome to the industry that will get you spending hehe. A Nikon D5200 is a fantastic camera. The only thing I think that will eventually annoy you (it annoyed me when I had my D5100) is the fact it has no internal focus motor, so the lenses are quite pricey. Also if I had the choice between a kit lens and a 50mm, I would have chosen the 50mm anyday, simply because they are very good lenses at very good prices. I've learnt to not regret what lenses etc I purchase, but instead how to use them better.

Anyone will tell you that a prime is excellent to get started with - particularly the 50mm. It will teach you a lot better; it gets you thinking about composition.

Just get out there and take some photographs ;).

Have fun with photography!

Hope to see you around.

Thanks guys! I did notice that indeed the lenses are quite pricey, that's one thing that I did not even consider when I was comparing the Nikon to a Canon.

Welcome. And when SAFC were in the same league as ITFC, I always looked forward to the friendliest Northern away fans in my pub when they played down here.

Thanks :) I'm sure it won't be long before we meet again, hopefully that'll be in the Premier league!
