....or will that shortly be 'No monies left to burn' :D

Hey Everyone,

Finally pulling my finger out and going the D-SLR route, I've had enough of P.A.S little cameras and can finally take up this hobby.

I have had a browse of the noobie links and section, but are there any books ighly recommended to start off with as my technical knowledge of the subject is as I have found over the last few days, severely lacking.

Apature this, F stop that, not too bad..... Crop sensors, calculating x,y,z with types of lenses on certain bodys, filters, DoF, and the vast array of options has completely dumbfounded me.

Currently looking through the classifieds and am leaning towards a 2nd hand body like a 40D and spending some money or glass like the tamron 17-50 non-vc or maybe trying the nifty 50, but otherwise am stupimed on the vast array of options out there. Would it be an idea to get both?

Will mainly be using the camera out and about, city breaks, holidays, generally at home, or pictures of the car whilst out on a drive maybe with some landscapes. Any advice or links to push me towards certain recommendations?

Cheers

Adam

Hi Adam,

welcome to TP and I hope it helps you as much as it has me. Lots of good advice as you build your kit and that will deplete the bank balance.................... but it's fun!

Welcome Adam! It won't take long, within a few days I'd parted with far too much money buying the lenses I currently have. Be careful! :D

Welcome to TP Adam

the Canon 40D is a cracking camera and can be had used for a little over £300, there have been some fine examples going for the £350 mark all boxed with low shutter counts.

The "nifty" is a great all rounder also and its cheap as chips (although nowadays chips are not that cheap )

Welcome, I hope you've Got deep pockets:lol: I'm on my 11th camera in 4years:gag: Lost count of how many lenses.

welcome Ad!

you might want to give this book a try - covers everything really - and many on here have recommended in the past.

40D is a very good camera... but be careful not to get 'gear envy' as you get going.. there's really no need! Nifty 50 is also a cheap way in and it produces stunning stuff.

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice so far

@leftcurl: Ordering it now, I remember hearing about that book enough.

Had a nice play in jessops and with a work mates 550d. Too small for me hands to be quite honest and feels a little bit light and cheap.

Wish my standards were lower. The 60D felt nice when I hel it, but still a little plastiky and although the movable screen is nice, it just screams gimmick.

Currently still looking at playing it safe with a 40D or going mental on a 7D (most likely from kerso) and paring either with a Tamron 17-50 non-vc and maybe a nifty 50.

Have £80 of amazon vouchers and £200 gift money from christmas to use which should cover most of the tamron and some accessories. Just need to stump up the readies for a body and just start shooting.

I now feel your pain and I haven't bought anything yet :bonk:

Haha welcome, be sure to warn your wallet about the battering it's bound to take! :p

Have fun with it mind!
