Interesting segueway, I'm having some small success using Pixsy to track down and claim money for photo-theft. Not an advert or affiliated or anything, but it's way more efficient than doing it manually. Also, letters from lawyers asking for payment have wayyy more clout than something from me. People can ignore me... ;)

My thoughts on Martin Parr were covered last year too, not going to repeat that here :)

My legal friend has always ridiculed my attempts to make money by selling photographs I've already taken. Waste of time, he's always said. What you should do is use the power of the web properly. Stop worrying about people stealing them. Publish more of them more widely in more easily findable and stealable form. Then find out who are the biggest thieves and sue them.

^ Your legal friend should also inform you that its not theft or stealing, it's infringement. i.e. making an unauthorised copy.

Sigh........

I'd ignore your friend. That's what basically amounts to a fishing expedition to deliberately tempt copyright infringers - it doesn't advance your photography or anyone else's. It will just satisfy a few greedy legal types who have no interest in creating anything other than a bigger bank balance. It's similar to those legal companies who buy patents and then go out looking for people to sue because their product may have some technical infringement of some minor subclause. They'd rather do that than capitalise on the technology or concept for the benefit of society. Sad really.

I can see where Martin Parr is coming from - to a point. However, I can't imagine Magnum's lawyers having a similar viewpoint if you used his pictures without permission.
