Help!!! Hopefully someone can help me. Used a polarization filter this weekend and I can't get it off the lens anymore. Anyone an idea?

Try an elastic bang to give you a bit more grip on it.

Only use that lens on a sunny day ?

But seriously, rubber gloves are a good way :D Then in future try not to tighten it so much ... I learned that little tip myself having been in the same situation

You can buy dinky li'l filter wrenches, but a rubber band is much cheaper and works just as well. Just follow the postie's route and you're sure to find plenty.

My CPL used to do this too. I put a TINY amount of copper grease on the threads to stop it happening again - so far so good! If it works for bolts, why not filters?

From numerous experiences with this on thin polarisers (like Kenko/Hoya) - there is just not enough grip on fixed part to turn it. Grease is a bad idea imo - as it tend to get on the glass (front element or polariser) even thogh incidentally but then you'd spend more time cleaning it out.

This is what I do usually - leave it in a cold place for an hour or so (not fridge or freezer) and try again.

If that does not work, try the following: grab the polariser ring (the one that turns all the time) and pull it away from the lens holding the lens. Maintaining that pull, try to turn it in the direction of unscrewing whilst pulling it. Your pull should be relatively strong, after it gives in - unscrew it normally. I found that this works 100% of the time with my Kenko CPLs

Get a rubber mouse type mat or similar pad, put lens face down on it, apply a little pressure and turn.
The trouble with gripping the sides is its already tight without you distort the shape slightly to undo it :)

Not sure that will work on a CPL as the end piece rotates independently of the filter screw...

OP: Are you turning it, but it's not unscrewing or are you unable to turn it completely?

i had trouble getting a filter off the first time i used them and i found that i was gripping it too tightly - pinching it was just making it grip the edges of the thread. I just loosened my grip and it came off easily! :bang:

try warming it up a little to make the lens part expand or maybe cool the filter with some ice in a plastic bag

Another one to try, when my filter wrench failed on a slim filter...

So I joined 3 slim cable ties together and zipping them on, this worked as you can grip the square ends to twist alot of force without damage.

oh yes... i did this and after wrestling with it for ages i took it to the Real Camera Co in manchester and let them do it.. charged me a fiver ... but at least i didn't have to watch!!

worse than that though... i put a new filter on it.. then dropped my camera face down which smashed the filter and has also bent the frame of the filter so i can't get it off!!
I hate being forceful with the lenses so it's back to the shop i go :bonk:

Or a long soft cloth wrapped around the edge of the filter, wrap it all the way round leaving both ends free, twist the ends together until it's tight, then turn holding the bit you twisted, hope that makes sense.

As already said try rubber gloves, or I used the sidewalk of a car tyre, take the lens of the camera and put rear cap on lens and cap on body, press front of stuck filter against tyre and turn, the reason this works when rubber gloves don't always is due to the fact that you are not misshapping the filter by gripping it and squeezing. Just make sure you are pushing firmly against the tyre.

But, again, that won't work with a polariser (as per the OP) as the end turns independently of the filter body.

Opps, that will teach me to read thread title and then the replies and not the OP, ignore what I said.

That's right, it turns but doesn't come off. So it's not too tightly, it just doesn't come off. I guess I'll try the tip of pulling and unscrewing at the same time.

Thanks though for all the good tips.
I loved the one about only using the lens on sunny days

your not just turning the polariser at the end are you:eek:

just a thought:p

Go on, admit it! You were turning it the wrong way all this time  (glad it's fixed)

But the trick with pulling and turning at the same time worked, so problem solved.

Glad it worked - took me a while to arrive to this way of unscrewing stuck CPLs, having really frustrating couple of days when I stuck my CPL on a lens whilst being in cold place and then wend out for shooting in a really hot environment (was this summer). It seems to expand from the heat locking itself really tight in a lens filter threads...
