:'( My favourite, most used lens...Canon 50mm1.4 has just suddenly stopped auto focussing, still works manually though..
any ideas..repair or just accept it's worn out and get a new one..
can these be repaired..how much you think?

If it's the USM one, the autofocus motor may have packed up, got a broken wire, or even just a dirty contact... For the trouble of getting an estimate, I'd go get it repaired...

Canon UK authorised lens repairers here

really daft question
it's not set to MF is it???

dear god

plan B

- does another lens on the same body work ok - yes - not the body
- does the same lens fail on another body (someone else's?)? - yes - 'tis the lens

if you goto http://www.fixationuk.com/ and download the repair form - and send it together with the lens to them they will give you an evaluation of the cost to repair free - but you will need to pay postage both ways - i have used them several times they seem fine and are listed as both canon and nikon recomended repairers

i brought my nearly new but used 50 1.4 for around £200 - i would expect repair to be half that

Have you tried cleaning the contacts with a cotton bud and a (tiny) amount of nail polish remover? If it's been stored at any point without the black plastic cap then it's possible it's just dirty. Likewise do the ones on the camera, but do it with it upside down to avoid getting crud inside the camera itself.

Cheers,
James

thanks for all the replies..yes i tried it on two other bodies..cleaned contacts still no joy..
Fixation sounds best bet, heard they are good..thanks

not used them but they do seem to get good reports
good luck!

Fixation sorted out my 50mm f1.4 when it stoped focussing (auto and manual) and few months back. Wish I'd saved the money and gone for the f1.8 rather than the f1.4 that I though would be more reliable...

Try moving the AF?MF switch a few times - even beign a little more forceful then normal - this cured the problem on one of my Sigma lenses !
