Help!!!!!!

OK, so I got to use the new 6D today for the first time, and went to download the twenty or so images.
I did read the manual (otherwise known as the "destructions"), and it seemed to be the same as the Sony A700 - boot up the PC - attach the USB lead to camera, then to PC - turn on camera - at which point I hoped that the box giving me the option to download using Adobe Elements 9 would appear - NO!!!!
So, as it wasn't playing that game, I turned the camera off, disconnected the USB lead, removed the SD card and put that in the slot on the PC.
It looked good to start with, downloading 20 files, then prompted Adobe Elements to start, and then DISASTER! - A WARNING CAME UP THAT IT COULDN'T RECOGNISE THE FILE TYPE.
So, here is some information.
I shoot RAW (both on Sony and Canon), so why doesn't it recognise the files? I can run through the images on the camera, and they look fine, so is there a compatibility problem between this version of Elements/RAW file that I didn't have with the A700?

Please help, because I am having a run of things going wrong at the moment.

Yes. Raw files are all different. This sucks. A lot. Somebody can explain why the manufacturers say that is but I prefer to believe it's so you have to keep upgrading your software.
 
Don't forget you can also use Canons own software (free with your camera) for the short term if you are thinking of upgrading Elements. I think 13 is the latest version.

RAW is not a universal file format like jpeg etc. Iit's all to do with compatability. I have PSE7 which I don't use , but it will recognize RAW from a 350D but not the 550D as the 550 wasn't around when v7 of the software was released. You're seeing everything fine in the camera because even though you may be taking RAW only, it displays a jpeg (and there's nothing wrong with the camera/card). RAW is the raw data from the sensor as I understand it, so change the sensor, change the data (and your old software can't read it).

Cheers Jonathan, I thought that it may be that, and as you say it really "sucks". I hate the whole concept of built in obsolesence and non compatibility of upgrades - it is so cynical:mad:

I wasn't thinking of upgrading Elements but it looks as though I may have no choice:rolleyes:
 
quick question have you loaded canons software which has the eos utility on it this will help connect to the camera
 
I've got a 60D and my Elements 9 shows the RAWs from that, which are CR2 files. Pretty sure PSE9 was out before the 60D. What version of elements have you got?

Yes it's not bad software, DPP has fairly recently been updated and once you get your head round it, it's okay.

Another thing I like is if / when they upgrade any of the software, you can download the latest version foc.

Load your disc up and then pop onto Canon Europe software site and see if there are any upgrades available

I am using Elements 9 and I have a 6D.
 
Many thanks to everyone who replied to this and helped me out.
I have managed to import the RAW files and edit/convert them using DPP as suggested.
Obviously I don't know my way around it yet, but it does seem a bit basic and not that easy to navigate compared to Elements.
 
Elements 9 issupposed to be compatable with the Canon 60 d you may need to update your version though. Open camera raw and look what version you have at the top.
 
If you're unwilling to upgrade Elements I'd fully consider what Jonathan suggested and download the free Adobe dng converter - this can make for quite an efficient workflow ...
 
Hi Andy.
Just come back to this as I remember having an issue when I got the 6d.I tried the dng converter but for me it was a faff. I don't have elements but do have cs5.
I connect my 6d to the pc with cable supplied with the camera. When folder opens I just drag them to my desktop or wherever you prefer. I then clear the card ready for use again.
I then open Canon Dpp rate my images edit the ones I like delete them I don't. When you edit the raw you have the option to open in photoshop when youve done.
