I use dropbox on my Galaxy S2 as it backs them up automatically as soon as I hit a wifi spot including home.

do you have aperture on your mac?

if yes, then go to the far left, scroll to the very top, you'll see the external device.

hope that helps

If you have WiFi then one word -
Airdroid
Download it from the play store. Its self explanatory.

I use both Dropbox and Airdroid. Both work superbly, but for me they each address differing needs.

Dropbox takes care of photo uploads to the cloud and from the cloud onwards to my laptop, as well as allowing access to a whole bunch of files (documents and photos from my DSLR) on the phone. In combination with Dropsync (paid version) my entire Dropbox folder is replicated to the phone whilst on WiFi and charging at home so I have everything at my fingertips without reliance on a data connection whilst out and about.

Airdroid lets me manage other files on the phone such as ROM images.

To the OP - may I ask why you don't wish to use Dropbox?

dont want to pay for storage for my pics when i have a 1 tb external hard drive
to store them on

Dropbox gives you free space, which you can use to move your files from the phone to pc.

My master photo files, mostly raw, all sit safely on various hard drives at home and occupy a few hundred GB per copy. However once processed and converted to JPEG they amount to around 5GB in total It this this 5GB of photos, plus a few other documents, which I store in Dropbox. I pay nothing for the storage due to referral growth and 50GB free courtesy of Samsung which I don't use.

Photos taken on my phone are uploaded automatically to Dropbox whenever I have a WiFi connection and add just a tiny fraction to my storage requirements. The beauty of the whole setup is that I have copies of everything on phone, cloud and laptop so there are various backups in different locations free of cost and free of effort.

Of course there is no requirement to store your regular photos on Dropbox in any form, but as an effortless way to secure photos to your PC from your phone it seems very convenient to me.

What happens if you edit a file? Does it get copied to all the other devices or does it get overwritten by the backups of that file?

Then on the other hand...

What if you edit a file and it becomes corrupted? Does it then overwrite all your backups of that file? In which case they're not really backups are they?

Then also...

What if you want to delete a file? Does it delete all backups of that file too? or does it keep replacing the deleted file until you delete all the backups as well?
What if deletion is accidental?

You can see in each case how a syncing system between devices could potentially lead to a great deal of hassle.
This ^^ is why I prefer proper backups, rather than syncing between devices.....

or use a good sync package like "allway sync" where you can do file versioning

Proper Backups - rely on you remembering, rely on single devices, does it do versioning without you having to do it manually?

Dropbox - All computers have copies of the files, all mobile devices can browse the files. Dropbox does versioning automatically (you just need to turn it on)... https://www.dropbox.com/help/11/en . I sync between 2 desktops, 2 laptops, I have shares with a team of developers and shares with other people. I have about 20Gb in dropbox and I haven't had a single corruption. How to recover deleted files.... https://www.dropbox.com/help/296/en. Again you may have to turn it on.

If you delete a file, it gets deleted everywhere, but you can recover it.

Automatic is always better than manual (unless you do it a really stupid way)

Dropbox isn't the best solution for backup, it is the best solution for transferring files and syncing files.

If you want backup, look at crashplan, Amazon Glacier etc.

For you, I would transfer using dropbox, but backup using your 1TB drive as you like your manual way for peace of mind.

.

My backups run from batch files, every time my PC is turned on it creates a new backup folder on my external drive, today it'll be N:\Backups\20130718 (the date is backwards so that it automatically lists the folders in date order).

It then copies the files and folders I want into that folder and deletes any backup folders more than 14 days old. So i've always got complete backups going back 2 weeks, meaning if I want to return to a previous version I simply select the date and find the file I want.

Simple, but effective :D

But only 1 backup media?

But only 1 backup media?

I only need one..... The likelihood of the original and backup failing at the same time is so tiny that it doesn't even warrant thinking about.

Taking it back to the original topic, my tablet (Nexus 7) backs itself up to my home FTP server, using an app that automatically sends specified files/folders over FTP at a set time, the FTP server is then backed up every night in the same manner as I described above.

The point is that syncing software and keeping the same files on different devices, can get you into a mess if your not careful.
