Right, here's my dilemma: (it's a biggy) :help:

I'm going to NYC for the first time beginning of March. Partly to just see the city, but mainly to photograph it!

I've been putting off buying my first DSLR because I assumed the 400D would be updated around January/beginning of February. It appears I was right. But with a March ship date for the 450D (some are saying April), I have a problem :(

So, I guess I have following options:

1) forget it, buy a 400D plus a good lens and live with having an out-of-date camera.

2) take my 4-year-old P&S and do the best I can (potentially find a 450D [XSi] in NY itself! Unlikely...)

3) get a 40D (and probably have no dosh left for a telephoto lens)

Realistically, I have a budget of around £800 (max £1000) for body, lens(es), memory cards, case, spare battery.

Help!

Depends if you really want the 450D, if so I'd take the P&S and see if anything is available in NY

or get a secondhand body which should come with batteries, and have pretty much the same resale value, and the lenses you want. The bag can be used with the new camera when you get it, and the memory cards will fit the new one as well (assuming the 2nd hand one takes the same type). That way you get a decent body to go with and everything elase can be swapped across when the one you really want is released.

If i were you (and im sure i wan in the same position once, i would get the 40D, it is such a good camera, i think it is worthy of the extra over a 400D as i have had both.

For £735 you could get this :

CANON 40D + BITS from DigitalRev which includes grip, lens, extra battery etc, then get a decent lens out in the states for alot cheaper than here.

Personally if your new to DSLR i would go for the 400D body, 2gig CF card & proberly a 17-40mm F4L & a Battery grip you then have one hell of a camera.

Thanks a million for convincing me Kinchy. I ordered one! Not that specific deal, but a 40D with the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS Canon lenses from the same seller. I'm so excited!!:woot:

Will let you know once it arrives!

maybe too late, but i'd wait until I got out there to buy with the exchange rate the way it is. Ship the boxes back home separately though.

You know, I did think long and hard about this, but I really wanted to get to know the camera before traveling so I can just shoot without having to think which dials and buttons to turn/press... Hopefully it'll all be second nature by the time I get there! Also, I don't reckon I'd've saved more than £50. (got a pretty sweet deal on ebay).

as long as its all ok of ebay you do hear some nightmare stories

Yeah, you do hear some nightmare stories... This seller has 99% feedback though, with several thousand sales. So I'm just hoping and praying it'll arrive!

I will, of course, explode with joy in some thread here on TP when it does arrive. :D

have you felt the difference between the 40d and 400d?? it is quite considerable and made my mind up straight away. and you seem to have ruled out nikkon, any reason?

I've played with both a 400D and a similar-leveled Nikon model for a while. Somehow the Canon one just clicks with me more naturally. I guess it's a very subjective thing. I've never used a 40D, but by all accounts it's a great camera. And the larger the better really... at least once you're over the pocket-sized P&Ss! It's due to be delivered to my home on Wednesday. Unfortunately I won't be there for another two weeks though. [Doh]

One thing I'd strongly recommend for New York is a wiiiiiiiiiide lens.

18mm is wide. 10mm is wiiiiiiiiiide. I have the Canon 10-22 and I love it, especially at the wiiiiiiiiiide end.

Pretty much what I was thinking  but I'm feeling a bit broke having just bought a 40D and no less than four 2GB CF cards! I'll get a 10-20 one day, but will have to survive NY without a wiiiiiiiiiiide lens :D

Besides, everyone knows what New York looks like in wide-angle. I'm gonna try to get a bit more detail of those amazing skyscrapers ;)

Don't forget to pop into B&H with a credit card and leave the girlfriend in a museum for the afternoon.
