I've just finished editing a wedding I shot in LR4 over the past couple of days and I've just got home and lost all my 16 hours of editing :bonk:
For some reason the catalogue is clear, all previous imports have gone and most importantly, my quick collection is also empty!
Is there anyway I can retrieve these? Does LR4 backup after a certain time? Stupidly I just left my MacBook pro on instead of backing up every now and then.

Any help would be much appreciated ...

Did you import the original files to your hard drive first? Then edit them from there? Or did you edit directly from the RAW files on the memory card?

Raw files are on the hard drive and edited them from there!

Have you checked the history for the photos, is there anything in there?

Time machine should have a back up? Since ML it does local back ups if you have free disk space and you regular TM disk is not connected.

History is clear Wayne, except for when I imported them again hoping they may have kept the edited data, but nothing. All are showing no editing on them at all !!

Typically the TM is on a separate network which I only do every Thursday night :bonk:

Did it lose power and shut down then or something? I think LR only 'Saves' on exit.. so if it was terminated unexpectedly, you may have lost the edit history.. (Although this is only an opinion - not known fact)

I'm guessing LR4 quit unexpectedly. Pulling me hair out now, can't find anything on google but was hoping the edit data might have been stored somewhere ....

search your computer for
*.lrcat
files to see what you have
and then look at their dates to see if anything corresponds
LR keeps track as you go along and if it crashes sometimes not even the last action is lost.

Ive just tried that, but only brings up the last catalogue from when i re-imported all the Raw files again to see if all the editing data had been restored. Im guessing by me importing them again has over written the last Ircat data :'(

Is LR set to backup the catalogs on exit?

Yes it is, but it unexpectedly quit so hasnt backed up and stupidly, ive kept the macbook on for the past few days while editing instead of backing up :bonk:

I always close LR and say yes to the current open catalog being backed up, whenever I am leaving the PC for more than a couple of mins.

Looks like im gonna be learning the hard way! Too be honest, i normally do. But as ive been working from home over the past few days, i thought i would just keep it open :'(

Ive found cache.dat files in adobe camera raw relating to all my files. Is there anyway i can use these or link them back to the Raw files?

Since mountain lion, (or maybe even lion?) it now uses spare disk disk space to do a time machine backup on your LOCAL disk, & it will clear when you connect to your normal TM disk.

At least thats how it works on my mbp.

Try Clicking apple on top left, about this mac and system info, storage, it may show a chunk of hdd taken up by backup.

You could of course just open TM and see what saves its got .....if any ;)

(hope you on ML!!)

Shaun .... You nearly became an instant hero fella.
Did exactly as you said, and you was right, a backup existed. So opened up TM and it shows that it backed up every hour. So I located the 2 files needed for the previous LR4 catalog and restored them to the desktop. 1 was 4mb and the other was 1.4gb!!
With a huge sense of relief, I rushed into LR4 and tried to open the catalog, but to avail. I had an error come up saying the file was corrupt :(
I've continued to google search about the error I was getting, but seemed to hit a brick wall.

Thanks anyway Shaun, as I said earlier, you nearly became an instant hero, but there is still hope

Agh nearly! Are there any other back ups that are not corrupt?

Eg go back every hour and restore until you find one that is not corrupt?

If not it might be more of a case trying to see if you can do anything with the corrupt file?...

Hope it works out for ya :)
