Had a circuit breaker trip and now my comp won't start. little green light is flashing by the power in cord but it won't power up from the front switch. tried nplugging the power and waiting a minute, but still no joy.

It's an old 'compaq presario sp 1239 uk'

If I can't fix it, can I take out the hard drive and get my stuff off it via an enclosure. It's on xp and my other comp is on vista.

Just what I didn't need right now:thumbsdown:

Aye, you can get your data from the hard-drive as you suggested.

You might get away with a new power supply unit to fix your PC (about £20).

Any suggestions as to what to replace a 'Bestec ATX 300 12 Z' psu with? and where to get it.

Price you want to pay? It's an ATX supply so easy to change (if you can get it out easily!)

I'd go with a well known brand - something like Seasonic, Corsair (my preference), Coolermaster, BeQuiet. I'd be looking to spend £50+ on it too.

I'd put in at least a 450W power supply (I prefer to have headroom as I've had 2 350W go on me). I personally look to put ~650W in my machines.

Where: ebuyer.com

Just make sure there are no restrictions on the length of the power supply. Some cases can cause problems.

Cheers Andy, I would prefer to get a little better spec as I may have a fried Mother board too so may be able to use the new psu in a self build replacement later on.

Good advice as usual:thumbs:

If you're thinking of self building, I'd go 500W+ as you never know what you want to put in in the future. Also, you may want to look at the power rating. As I have 3 tower systems here, I'm starting to look at more efficient (and quiet as possible) power supplies. If PSU noise worries you, have a look through http://www.silentpcreview.com/

Replaced the psu this morning (Corsair CX430) comp is still dead.
From what I can gather this would indicate a knackered MB.
This is the spec thing for the comp...
http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bi...eriesId=450204&prodTypeId=12454&printver=true

It runs XP Home, has 3.5 gig ram, has a radeon hd 3450 graphics card added.

It conked out after a grill element in the kitchen knocked out the mains power. I just switched the whole lot back on not realising the comp was on. Couild this have caused th MB to die?

I love this old thing and would like to get it better. Any suggestions most welcome. Pepared to spend about a hundred quid.

power surges can cause motherboards, memory and cpu to die.

so basically nothing happens when you press the power switch?

if it is the motherboard looks like ebay is your best bet, search for "PTGD1-LA" which is the motherboard model. about £20-30.

Hmm... that's going to be a bit of a pain to get running. It's so old... You'd be better off putting a couple of hundred more and getting something new - especially with a bright shiny new PSU ;)

Good idea Neil. Hadn't thought of the bay...

Thanks Neil and Andy, I will see if i can find that old MB as you suggest Neil.

I've just been searching on that main board out of curiosity. One person got one going again by removing one of the ram modules as the surge had taken it out and was preventing booting. if it has 2 or more try it with just one. Someone else removed the bios battery for 24 hours and it reset.
Both are pretty unlikely but nothing to lose :)

One thing I just noticed is that the cpu power connector on the first psu had a four pin connection but the new psu has a six pin connection with a spur comming off it for two pins. I assumed this was okay and just fitted it with the for pin section and the little clip hitting the raciever on the cpu connection.

Could that be it?

Think that is what it is supposed to do - fit to 4 or 6 way secondary power and 2 ways are unused for 4 pole.

Well, I did a paperclip jump start test on the old psu and the bloody thing is okay, wish I had tried that before buying a new one. However the cpu fan failed to come on so that and the mother board must have been terminally zapped. Luckily, I have my other comp from my studio for the time being.

I think a spot of hangover development is in order now.

Thanks for your advice and help guys.
