Why on earth is CS5 doing this to some jpegs and not others??

Are the embedded ICC profiles the same for each image? Have a look at the following 2 links to see what effects this can cause if it is not correct:

All my shots come out of LR3 as prophoto RGB. One of these is fine as that the other is screwed even though it was fine on export??

Well, it certainly looks like ICC profile issues... Download exiftool and run the following command:

exiftool -ICCProfileName <filename>

and see what the two images say.

I cannae get that to work.

When you say "cannae get it to work", do you mean you can't find/install/get exiftool to even run or it just gives a blank output?

Running on 2 jpgs I have here gives:

$ exiftool -ICCProfileName IMG_2334.JPG

(I use cygwin, hence the "funny" prompts). The first image doesn't have anything embedded, the second one does...

I mean I can't see how to run the command. When I open the app it doesn't allow me to type anything.

You need to run it from a command line unfortunately.

The one uploaded today has ProPhoto RGB, the one uploaded on 19th has no Profile. Go into Edit->Colour settings... and try different RGB colour spaces. The one uploaded on the 19th changes colour depending on the working colour space (as it has no embedded profile) whereas the one you uploaded today stays the same as PS knows how to manage it's colour space relative to the one embedded in the image.
