I might be in danger of losing photos if I dont get this cleared up. :(

I said the other day that some RAW photos in various folders on my pc are showing as there in windows but not opening in anything but Rawshooter.

Well today, I took 51 shots in 2 sessions....only in the garden so nothing much important..... the first lot downloaded to lightroom fine.
I went out and took more...... lightroom cant see them on my card.... only the first ones.

But if I look at the card in windows it shows all 51 but with no thumbnails...I cannot view them with windows raw viewer and cannot open them with anything exept rawshooter again.

What the hell is happening. Ive already had Adobe Bridge not able to see half my files.

Im just going to try using a different card (ive been using the DaneElec one from 7-dayshop (4gb). i wll use a sandisk 1gb card and take some more...perhaps the first one is corrupt.

Have you re imported the images Janice?

I find it only imports the new ones.

it first shows whats on the card for you to choose which you want to import. it doesnt even show the last 20 odd shots but I know they are there as they show in windows explorer on the card.
But when they DO show in windows explorer... you click the icon of a photo and it opens windows raw viewer but then says Failed to load the image.

Well, Ive re-installed Microsoft RAW viewer and its still the same...with no rhyme nor reason.

Some of my folders have raw shots which can be seen as thumbnails...some have all or some that cant....some can all be opened in raw viewer, some have some that can and some that cant.

I thought it maybe when I changed from 350d to 30d...but its not... some 350d shots cant be opened, some 30d shots cant.

Grrrrr :bang:

you might be able to run a scandisk on the CF card which might get them back - but it does sound like the files are corrupted unfortunately. Try googling for CF recovery software perhaps?

To be honest..Its not the ones on the card Im so worried about /..... its the ones in all my photo folders on the computer. i could never do anything to them all separately as there are hundreds dotted about all over my photo folder which are affected... i cant see what they are as there are no thumbnails.

Bummer! Don't you back up the files anywhere Janice?

Well i have a backup but it was done only a few days ago so i guess they will all be the same corrupted files.

I just dont understand how you can have two folders next to each other in my photos folder.... one contains .cr2 shots that can be seen with thumbnails and will open in rawviewer......and the next folder contains .cr2 files which dont show as thumbnails and cant be opened in rawviewer so I have no idea what they are as they are only in a date folder.

Have you tried rebooting the computer? I had some aggro the other day with windows caching what was on a CD and refusing to read that the CD had been changed. The files shown on the first CD could even be run without the CD being in the drive!

Try R-studio http://www.r-tt.com/

The trial will allow you to preview what it can recover, it's a very poweful recovery program indeed.

Thanks guys. my main prob isnt actually a card...its the fact that for week or two lots of my photos in my folders on the computer have no thumbnails or cant be opened unless in rawshooter.
with no thumbnails I cant tell what the photos are of...i cant open every one big just to find out!!

its so random...just some here, some there. they werent like it before. cant work it out. all photos are identical in properties but some work, some dont.

yes....some folders I can see a few but not all.... and some folders i can see all, and some folders I can see none!

Have you tried copying one of the folders or a sample of dodgy files to a different PC to see if the problem moves with it? If it does it's the files, if it doesn't it's your PC, in which case I'd recommend a reinstall  If you want to send me a couple of suspect files to try on my PC then feel free

I'm not sure if it will help you or not Janice, but I had a similar problem with files and this program Click Here once downloaded, can clean 'issues' on your computer. It does many other things too. It fixed the problem for me. Hope it helps.

Janice,

Have you checked the Canon support forums? A friend (with a 1d mk2) had a similar problem just after I built him a new pc, if I had a problem like this I'd be straight into the Nikon forum, someone will most likely have had the problem before.

I dont see its anything to do with canon. some files from ages ago have no thumbnails,,, some recent ones....very sporadic. not a canon prob...more of a windows prob I think.

I just cant see some thumbnails of cr2 files or open them in windows raw viewer..but some I can.

right across my whole folder structure of photos

Are any Raw files from the 30D viewable? Also what happens when you try and view the Raw files via windows picture and fax viewer? Do you just see a small version of the photo?

Hi Janice
Did you get sorted in the end?

Not that I'm an expert but you don't think you computer has picked up a virus do you?

as far as i can see, the latest version of microsoft raw image viewer does not support RAW's from the canon 30D

I think thats the problem. Ive jsut been checking and where there are some folder which are showing a few...thats where theyve been edited and they save a tiff/jpg file in the same folder.

Good job thats sorted....thanks

still means I cant quicklly see what files are in a folder in explorer view though. what do all you other 30d owners do?

surely it doesn mean we have to open each file in photoshop just to have a look? :cuckoo:

Adobe bridge is your friend Janice :)

It bloody isnt! It wont open any file at all....just shows white boxes all over.

I havent been able to use bridge for months...even reinstalling that and photoshop made no help.

will it just open up a file to see it if i double click the file.... thats what i want really, not to open a program and navigate to the file. i will have a look for that...thanks.

Best bet would be to give the trial ago, as im not too sure if it will offer a simple explorer style window like microsoft raw viewer does.

With all this hassle you've been having reading files Janice, I might suspect your hard disk is playing up or possibily on the way out

If I were in you're shoes I'd get the whole lot backed up and install a brand new hard drive.

It may not be the problem but better to be safe than sorry (and then if you're still having problems you know it's definatly not the HD :p )
