Hello all.

I've recently switched from Nikon gear to a Canon 5D and such.

I still have a SB600 flashgun which I really like and was given to me as a gift, so I'm reluctant to sell it to fund a replacement.

Many long Google searches tell me that I shouldn't mount the flash directly into the 5D's shoe because one or both devices will be damaged (thanks to different trigger voltages). Canon is 6V, Nikon is 12V. Bang!

Therefore I purchased a Wein 'hotshoe safe-sync' adapter (meaning both devices chat to eachother at the same voltage).

However I can't get the SB600 to fire at all when mounted on the 5D using the adaptor. What am I missing? Obviously I know the flash works otherwise!

I've even made sure the 5D's custom setting 7 is set to compulsory flash firing. I daren't mount the flash directly into the camera as I risk breaking both!

Thanks!

Haha yes I'm fully aware Rob! And believe me I have thought about doing that. But I would like to avoid it if I can!

1. Not sure that you can fire it on the camera. I don't think you can.

2. You can only use the flash in Manual.

3. You will need a radio trigger and receiver to fire the flash

The best way (apart from buying a Canon-dedicated flashgun) would be to buy a set of wireless triggers, like the RF602 and use it off-camera mounted on that. You'd only have manual, but it's that or nowt, I'm afraid...

What about a wireless flash trigger... Have you thought about them - I havent a clue thou if that will work with a Canon - Nikon combi.....

Just thought I'd mention it in case somewhere out there could say if it did or not..

edit: as said by FITP ( posted at same time it seems)

I was aware of using the flash in manual, but I also thought the entire purpose of the Wein device was to allow the flash and camera to communicate, without risk to the electronics?

yeah, surprised that it doesn't work. sure the sb600 is in the right mode?...

orrr just swop it for a 430ex and you have ttl and everything is all nice and good... surely the person who gave it to you will understand and rather you have something useful than something that only works in manual mode with a block in the hot shoe.....

Indeed, I hope so! But I'll keep trying. Strangely the flash sometimes fires by itself, I think there's perhaps a dodgy connection somewhere. I thought I'd at least get the flash to fire when taking a picture!
