hello there. my first post on here. great site.
need a little help on recommending a tripod. budget is between £50 - £100.
(i know some will say thats enough for a good tripod but thats all i have :) )
i currently have a canon 350D, canon 50mm prime, soon to be sigma 17-70 and canon 70-300 IS.
currently looking at the velbon cx series but havent yet had a chance to actually try any out as of yet. obviously looking for one that can withstand the weight of the canon body and lens and any other lens i may get in the future. cheers guys/girls :)

Personally I would go for a Manfrotto, I had one of those Velbon CX and found it was a bit too light for my liking. I have a 190DB and a 680 Monopod both are very solid bits of kit. If you shop around you'll find some good deals on kits (tripod and head for less than £100) here are a few ebay examples if you don't mind buying from there.

Would be worth going into Jaccobs/Jessops/LCE to see them in the flesh.

manfotto 190 with a 390rc head should come in cheaper than your upper limit.

it's not the best head in the world, but it's steady enough for your kit.

Same setup as mine. I'd shop around first, got mine from T4 cameras for £100. Jaccobs were doing the kit for £95. Have a good look round. HTH :)

it was available in jessops and most camera shops a few months ago for less than that.
Have a look round before you ebay it.

I bought Manfrotto 190CL Tripod + 390RC Head from Jessops online.
You'll get the silver 190CL as shown. Do note that the 190d tripod is a lower model as sold on the links above.
190CL has quick lever-type leg locks, low angle adapter and leg warmers. Those are very usefull features over the 190D.

I've also bought a 679b monopod to make the order above £100 for free shipping. If your order is below £100 then you'll get charged £10 for shipping.
Adding CPB10PC discount code, I've saved over £12 too.

The only thing that cheesed me off was the 390RC head arrived with some scratches possibly a customer return item but I'm not sure. Could be just a one off.

Oh BTW, I wouldn't recommend 390RC head for serious portrait, landscape or any other photography that requires very accurate repositioning.
This is because everytime you adjust the knobs, it's difficult to keep the camera still for accurate position.
I only bought mine because I use it for motorsports. I'll be looking into a ball head soon.

Personally i have a Manfrotto 725B (same as the 724B, but with quick release). It's not as sturdy or versatile as the 190, BUT it is a lot lighter/smaller and so better if you want to carry it up a hill or something :D It's also got a ball head, which i think is a lot better than a 3way :) Cost is about £80.

does that hold your lenses ok?
now i have so many choices lol. i quite like the sound of the 725B matt.with it being lighter and all. i will be getting back into hillwalking next year when the weather picks up. the 190CL sounds good too. i will be using it for portrait, action shots, weddings possibly, landscape. what would be the best head to get with either the 725B or the 190Cl for these types of shots.
thanks

The 725B isn't as flexible as the 190, and you can't change heads. However, you need to look at what you actually want from a tripod :) as the 190+head will be quite a bit heavier than the 725B, and longer too.

The 725B is from the digi range, which are smaller and lighter, but less flexible and versitile, and look weedy next to an 055 for example! (055 is the bigger brother to the 190).

You don't have anything that heavy though (kit wise), so techinally could choose from quite a number of tripods :)

The best idea is to list what you want (eg. size, versatility), and work from there, rather than just asking for random suggestions!

yeah its ok for holding my lens, though a better head might be in order for the 70 200!

yeah your right mate. im probably better heading into jessops too and trying some out for size. although thanks people for the suggestions. you may have guessed im quite a n00b when it comes to tripods

I have the lil 390rc head on my tripod and it's OK for the job, it manages to hold my camera and 70-200 f2.8 steady. Ok, so it doesn't lend it'self to quick and precise adjustments like a geared head does, but for 30 odd quid........i can dig it!
