Hi,
Im off to Silverstone tomorrow (Friday) & I'm new to the world of DSLR I have a Nikon D80 18-135 kit lens & 70-300VR.

Can somebody please give me some tips on shooting at an event like this ie. what settings to use on my camera (Focus, Film speed, Fstop etc)

I have also been lucky enough to win a Renault F1 Garage tour so that should be good, and I don't want to mess up my chance of some great pics on my tour.

If anybody can help me with my quest I would be very greatfull, thanks in advance,
Billy

If you are allowed to take any photos on your tour, this will be the best place for you to get some good shots.

As for photos during the race - I'd forget it at Silverstone you are so far from the action even a 300mm on a cropped DSLR is a bit weak.

However if you are going to attempt it, choose Continuous AF and either pan at about 1/100 or select a shutter speed of at least 1/500 with the lowest aperture you can get IIRC is f5.6 at the 300mm end, selecting the ISO to acheive this.

Good luck getting the camera to focus on the cars rather than the wire fencing. Easier when panning than when using faster shutter speeds.

I went to Silverstone for the Renualt World Series and really enjoyed it, it was a fab day, so i'm quite jealous! LoL

I used a 70-200 F4 L and that was fine, so your 70-300 will be ok for the racing and your 18-135 will be perfect for the pics from the garage tour. :)

As for the settings, my best panning shots were around the 1/125 mark @ iso 100 using shutter priority, but it was a very sunny day. I also had my camera set on continious drive so i'd got more chance of getting a half decent shot. I'd say try diffent settings and see what works best for you. :)

Ooops...just realised you're going today!

Hope you got some cracking shots! :D

You can always manually focus, then no problem.
