help with settings !

hi ,had a couple of hours today at a bird sanctuary the birds were great my photography was not ! ..i know i have only had my camera a couple of weeks and i should be prepared to walk before i can run:nono: lol, but i did get quite frustrated today the problem was.... i thought if i set my camera to a very fast shutter speed it would catch the birds, while moving in a nice clear picture ,but they came out really really dark ,so i tried the AV setting and a very nice man suggested that i put the setting to the lowest f setting i have, i did this and did get some pic's but found the shutter setting was really slow and i couldn't work out how to change the thing ! I have uploaded 3 of my pics of today onto my gallery haven't worked out how to put them on this bit yet any comments on how to improve etc would be good ....thanks lilbun

hi lilbun will look at your gallery in a mo, having lots of issues myself. To put your images in a thread when you look at the photo in your gallery underneath will be some code in a box called linked image. Just copy and paste that code into your thread for each image you want to show.

Easiest way is to open a seperate browser/tab 1 shwoing your gallery one for your actual post.

Everything is a compromise. By using av, you are setting the aperture, you have no control over the shutter. For birds you need a fast shutter, but to get that you need lots of light. The only ways to get this is to use flash, a wide aperture or raise your iso. Of course, a wide aperture lessens the DOF, higher ISO introduces noise and flash is not really appropriate.
I'd start learning what each setting does and what you can and cant change in it. Then make sure you understand the exposure triangle and how to get the same results by changing different settings. Of course keep taking pics and make notes of what setting you used and change something and note what difference it made. You'll soon twig what changes have what effects.

Really, like the first one it looks like the focus is more on ther branch, as its sharper than the bird slightly, but all in all for your firts attempt at this sort of thing its a cracking shot, great depth of field as well.

Id be happy if I managed a shot like that.

thanks Tom i feel a bit better now knowing i cant change the shutter speed on the av setting rather than i just couldn't work out how to ....i think i will take it a bit slower and try learn wee bit at a time ,i just confuse myself doing to much at the once, and taking notes is a good idea !! the iso i'm still not quite sure about but i'l get there lol

Well done on linking the iamge lilbun. If you use the second box of code it will actually embed the picture in the thread as opposed to linking to it.
