Hi Folks,

Newbie poster so please be gentle.
I want to try my hand at Street Photography with my Canon S90 and wondered if anyone had any suggestions on the settings I should use as a starting point?
I have only ever used the Auto Mode so really need some help.

Any ideas?

Cheers

My generic setting for my S90 is P mode with flash off and auto ISO on up to 1600, shooting in raw (which when used with Lightroom's noise reduction gives perfectly usable results for normal sized prints at ISO 1600).

If not, I don't tend to use A or S but switch to Manual for full control. I guess it depends on the location and whether or not the light will be varying.

edit: I also use center point AF (and recompose) and not face detect.

Street photography is all about the CONTENT.. Most stuff you generally see is REALLY boring. Use auto if it means getting the shot. learn the timing and get the interesting /unusual/ stuff YOU havent seen before. or stuff you see all the time in a way you havent seen before. I spent a week in new york and shot five hundred frames a day + to produce less than one percent keepers and .01 I am proud to show. iso 1600 is over the top for most daylight sutuations... ( If you like the grainy look you can add it later) if you are in the street and the weather aint changing just set the manual exposure and forget about it. Cloudy days are best as it gives everyone a soft light and they don't squint.

I normally use centre point focus (then recompose), shooting raw in Av or Tv mode. However, as above a lot of it comes down to personal preference, for example, I prefer to keep the ISO as low as possible and adjust manually.
