Good morning all! Just want some basic help please.

I am having problems viewing RAW pictures on my comp, I dont know much about these so please bear with me if I sound like a total nunce.

The pictures are downloaded in .NEF format and I have downloaded the appropriate RAW codec thingy from Nikon, installed that and now i'm trying to view them using PS Elements 5.0 but when i try to open the image i get and error saying its the wrong file type??? :(

What am i doing wrong?

Thanks

You might need to go to the Adobe site and download the RAW update. Try this then follow the instuctions on how to do the update and it should work.

Are you converting the files with the nikon raw converter?

Erm, i'd like to think so.

I have downloaded the nikon codec if thats what you mean? I can view the RAW pics in PictureProject but just not in Elements 5.0.

As i said you need to update the RAW file for Elements 5.0 i had to do it with Photoshop. When new cameras come out it renders the RAW codecs out of date in the software, you have to update for new cameras, easy as that.

little off topic

If you have XP you can also download the RAW thumbnail viewer so you can get the thumbnails in windows explorer like you do with jpegs

After a long head scratch i finally managed to download the correct codec, also managed to get the thumbnail viewer too!

Thanks again fellas :)

Im looking at RAW files too, Ive downloaded the XP thing but also a trial of Olympus studio , but i have to say Im still confused

Let us know how you get on lol

JimBob,

I've been trying to find the correct thing to download so that i can access RAW files from my Nikon D40. I can't seem to find what I need. I downloaded camera raw from Adobe but Elements 5 still doesn't recognise the files.
Could you post the link to the download you used.

Thanks

When i get home from work tonight i'll have a gander to see if i can find it again :)

Once you have downloaded the correct codec you need to copy and paste the file into the Elements 5.0 folder on the C drive, there is a guide that shows you how to do it too.

Here we go -

First of all its best if you download and install this, its the NEF Codec from Nikon - Click Here

Next up, give this one a whirl. Its like Windows picture and fax viewer but allows you to view your RAW pictures after installing the above. I find that it's a slowish program so I have set it to only view my .NEF (Nikons RAW) pics and I still use Windows picture and fax viewer for JPEG's etc. - Click Here

Then finally download this and closely follow the instructions. - Click Here The instructions for Elements 5 that i used are -

"To install with Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0:

1. Exit Photoshop Elements
2. Open My Computer
3. Double-click Local Disk (C drive)
4. Navigate to: (Please read directory carefully)

Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats

5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.

6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 4.

7. Launch Photoshop Elements."

Hope this helps :) any probs then just let me know :D

Thanks again JimBob.

I've tried on several occasions in the past to get support for RAW files, with no success, being a bit thick when it comes to computers. Now I have finally managed, thanks to your help.

Now I will probably need a bigger hard drive if I am going to shoot RAW all the time.

Do other people always shoot RAW, or just when lighting conditions are a bit tricky?

My camera seems to do pretty well with the white balance on auto for outdoor shors, but it's more difficult to get the right setting indoors.

No problem. Happy to help :)

Ive only just started shooting RAW yesterday, seen as though i only just figured it out too!

I think it'd be 50/50, jpeg vs raw. They both have pros and cons. I havent really been using either of them long enough to comment but this RAW business makes things a bit simpler after the photos have been uploaded if the exposure etc wasnt right at the time of the shot.

I suppose RAW gives you a good piece of mind if lighting etc is a bit tricky like you say.

But then again, i know b****r all!
