Hi All

looking for some advice on how to blend a background and foreground so it looks natural. Replace the teddy with a 7 month old baby and you get the feel for what I am after. This was a quick 5 minute mock up and quick edit. How do I make it look like it hasn't been stuck on there. I've quick selectioned the bear, feathered by 5 then put onto the background.

Many thanks in advance

Hello Dave,

Couple of options. For simplicity, you could blur the edges of the baby when you put s/he in place.

Or do two layers of baby, the top layer baby lock in place, the one underneath enlarge only slightly and then make layer transparent to about 5-10% and then blur, also shift slightly to the left side. This might give an effect of light of the background falling near or on the outer edges of baby's face.

In essence play with layers! This is just a quick fix suggestion, may or may not work :)

Also look at http://psd.tutsplus.com/ heaps of info there.

What version of PS are you on? CS5 has magic lasso or something like that, you whizz round it with that, then use 'refine edge' and it comes up pretty good.

I mainly us Elements 10 but have CS5 so might dabble in there!

Thank you for the info and link  very helpful

Depends entirely how the baby is shot. If the background of the baby is a blocky colour or is differentiated from the background a lot then you should be able to mask using basic tools like select via colour, pen, and refine edge. this is all you should ever need to use and should be enough to tackle any task
