Help with photobook

Hi

I Hope someone can help - I want to make a photobook for my mother-in-law who lives on the other side of the world from us, so I want it to be of good quality so I have some questions I hope someone can help with!

I have looked at photobox but their pre set ones are....well naff! Is there software (not expensive photography at this point is just a hobby) or can I just design page by page on photoshop and send somewhere to be printed

and do you have any recommendations as to where I should send it to be printed?

Not used them myself or even done any photobooks, but I have heard people mention 'blurb' a lot.
 
I used http://www.MyPhotoBook.co.uk the other day. Turns out they're based in Germany, so it took a while to get my book, but I was pretty pleased with the quality. You can get 25% off through Quidco as well.
 
I've used Bob and their photopaper books are great. I've also been impressed with the Blurb books I've seen.

However all of the photobook design programs have their own issues. You'll get a better book if you design it yourself either with a proper DTP package (InDesign) or a proper bespoke album design package (photojunction is free) - however the learning curve is quite steep and you might be better off sticking to the manufacturers software if it's just for one book.
 
If you have a Mac and iLife I would recommend Apple Photobooks. They are a bit more but I love the covers and the paper.
 
I have used Blurb and was very pleased with the quality. There was a couple of faults with the first book they sent (bent page and some ink smudges) but they replied to my email query within 15 minutes of me sending it and after I sent them some pictures of the faulty pages they arranged for the book to be reprinted. This was within an hour of sending the first email to them.
 
I used bobsbooks and was really disappointed by it (and a page turned up bent!)
Even though I would never use them for printing photos - I have to say 'snapfish' do pretty decent photobooks (I get the leather cover ones) for quite a low prices and have money off quite often.

wow thank you for all the replies - I actually use InDesign for my work - no Idea why the heck I did not think of using it - not the brightest of buttons am I:thinking:
