You may have seen in another thread that I've fired up my old Canon EOS 620 film camera which is about 20 odd years old. All seems fine, but I can't find the handbook.

I'm a little concerned that it's not working quite how it should. If I remember correctly, in manual mode, if you were to over or under expose, one (or both) of the settings would flash in the viewfinder, but I can't make it happen, even at 1/4000 at f1.8 doesn't seem make it happen.

So, without a conventional light meter (as there isn't one), how do I know what settings to dial in ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Steve

I am guessing that the 600 I have is related, so from the manual on mine:

Exposure compensation
1. Press the exposure compensation button
2. While pressing it turn the electronic input dial to the desired compensation value.
3. Remve your finger from the exposure compensation button, the +/- mark indicating exposure compensation status appears in the viewfinder and in the display panel.

HTH, if yours is related and you need anything else from the manual let me know as at some point mine is going to be headed towards ebay!

Edited to add, in manual mode if you are over or under exposed it will say
M
OP 1.6

or

M
oo 5.6

or

M
CL 1.8

the OP = OPen 1.6 (you are underexposed)
the CL = CLose 1.8 (you are overexposed)
the oo = correct exposure

Thanks Susie, but I don't think that helps.

I'm trying to shoot in manual, and there isn't a light meter, so I need to know what the "base" settings are before I do anything else. I'm trying to find out what tells me that I'm either under or over exposed, and how to work out by how much.

Its the OP or CL that tells you if you are under or over exposed and by hoe much, in the vpanel on top the first line will say M telling you its in Manual mode, then under that it will either say OP and an amount, oo and the aperture you have, or CL and an amount.
Under that it gives the box with one shot or AI servo, battery, film winding mode etc.
The under/over exposure (or shutter speed) would appear only to flash if you are in Av or Tv mode.

Magic, thanks Susie... I've had a quick play and that seems to work.

I'm taking it to the WHF big cat meet tomorrow, so lets hope I get some decent pics...
