Hi, this is all very new to me but I am trying to learn. I am looking at a cheap lens whilst I educate myself. I have had a quick look around and am down to 3:

Canon EF-S 55-250 mm
Tamron 70-300mm DI LI Macro
Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro Super DG. (or the lower priced Macro DG)

Any help would be gratefully appreciated. I just need it for general purpose really until such a time I feel justified in spending a lot more money. Any others worth considering?

Many thanks in advance

I can't comment on the Sigma or Tamron lenses but the canon is a cracker for the price and, I believe, is the only one of the 3 to have built-in image stabilisation.

Cheers, from looking around the forum, I think u r right.

You know it!
For the money there's nothing that can touch the 55-250, expect to pay around £120-130 for a new one or £100-110 for a used one. Yes, they hold their value very well!
This is taken with mine, pretty much straight out of the camera (sooc), just a minor tweak or two.

Now is it worth spending more on the IS ii version?

Unless your buying 2nd had i would get the new version, Great lens for the money.

Cheers I was thinking of buying new. Just trying to find the best price. Loads on internet but worried that I will buy only to find it a grey import.

55-250 IS II? No difference in them other than a couple of cosmetic ones so whichever you can get at the right price really.
Kerso on here sells the Mk I for £119, bargain!!

Hi anybody used Digital Rev they have a page under Photo shopping on this site. Price is £125 for the Mk2 I know they ship from Hong Kong but at this price it might be worth any risk, plus they are on this site

Just curious but why do you favour the Mk II over the Mk I when optically there's no difference?

You may (very likely) get stung for import duties if you buy from Hong Kong so be prepared to add a fair bit to the price plus the charge Royal Mail will add for paying it on your behalf which I believe is around £8. ;)

If you look the price for the lens is £110 +£14.95 which is for import.
The mark II is £5 cheaper than mark I with new IS.
I went with digialrev as I didn't see any other at the time

The Canon refurb reseller on eBay are doing a mk2 for £120 + £3 p&p. Theres no risk of having to pay any duty etc but I suppose it comes down to whether you're prepared to buy reconditioned for the price saving.

Many thanks ESP Wozzaaah! Think I will go for the Canon over the other 2, now just need to think about the refurb mk2 v new mk1, leaning towards the mk1 if basically the same optically.
Cheers

No probs Mark, it's good to get different opinions but no matter if you get a Mk I or Mk II, you will be very impressed with either. ;)

To clarify on this post, all the items on our website have already included all import handling charges, and free shipping is offered. Therefore, the prices you see at checkout are the prices you will need to pay for the items.

If you are charged with import duties, you can contact our customer service department for reimbursement.

Pretty sure the idea of new IS was only supposition because the 18-55 IS mkll had an improvement to IS and people have just presumed it to be the same on the 55-250. Canon have always stated its only cosmetic differences on the 55-250 as it already had the newest version of their IS on the mkl.

Thanks for that Julia, well worth knowing!

I stand corrected :schtum:

I am considering one of these (canon 55-250mm) to complement my 18-55 kit lens and 50mm f/1.8.

Good information in this thread, thanks to those who have posted :)
