hi guys im posting this to pick your brains a bit my *** is a hair dresser and she needs some shots for advertisement and for some reason i said i would do it (why, i dont know) but im more of a sports and action man so a photo shoot like this is totaly alien to me. so what im asking is, can you guys give me a cupple of pointers so my *** wont kill me lol

im going to try and get a ring flash befor the shoot as i have only got a normal flashgun and have no real need for a proper light rig

any pointers are welcome

and thanks in advance

You have bitten off rather more than your equipment allows you to do if you want to do it properly I'm afraid. Most hair photography is lit with 4 lights. One fill light, one key light a rim light and a specific hair light set so that the colour and texture of the hair really sing.

It's a specific discipline if done right and needs space to set up. How about make up and clothing too?

4 lights? nah you can get away with 3!

Main light, hair light, background light and a reflector for fill.

or! if your really strapped for spare lights.
2 if you have one light with a light bank (big o diffuser panel) that will light the whole face and background with the other strobe for the hair light.

or clam shell lighting? one above, reflector below and a hair light?

god I love thinking out of the box.

Anyways, have to agree you are out of your depth.
and if this is about hair styling a ring light will do nothing to show it off.
the whole point of shooting hair is to show off depth and separation (hence more then one light)

there is a whole lot of thinking behind it really, the options I have put forward are a few available,
but the general set-up as mentioned above is just about the best as it achieves a balance between different types of light (soft diffused / harsh direct) serving their purpose making the subject stand out.
