I've just purchased a second hand Canon EOS 450D. It comes with the 18-55mm kit lens. I've been looking around at other lenses but not really sure what I'm looking at (hope that doesn't sound stupid).

Is there any other lenses I should consider looking at? I've been looking at the Tamron 70-300mm, would that be a good choice?

Thanks, Kelsey

Their are a few ways to go,longer lens for more reach,it really depend on what you want shoot :)

What are you shooting?

Mostly animals. My pets around the house and then also wild. I really like taking pictures of waterfowl too. I'm also considering street photography if I ever feel brave enough.

With a longer lens you start running into problems with light. At 300mm the lens s equivalent to 480mm so you need a shutter speed f about 1/500 or faster if you are handheld without an IS lens. The tamron VC (IS) is known to have poor autofocus and you might find the non VC version a bit restrictive in poor light.
I went for the sigma 150-500 but it might be a bit out of your price range.
Perhaps a second hand canon 55-250 IS kit lens. They should be fairly easy to get and for the price it is an excellent lens. If you decide later you want something better then resell it and you won't loose much.
