So I am quite new to the world of DSLR's, recently moved up from a bridge camera. I have a Nikon D300 and a friend let me borrow her 50mm 1.8 lens, I thought it was great but quite restrictive, but I really liked it and get some great Portrait shots with it. So I would now like to buy a lens, and I am totally lost about what type to go for! I have a little studio set-up in my house and take a lot of children and baby photos for friends and family so I would like a lens suitable for shooting Portraits, I found the 50mm would not let me squeeze in enough people, I need a lens that will allow me to take small group photos.
I have also photographed a Wedding for my sister-in-law, and I have another Wedding this summer for a friend. But have NO lens yet for my new camera!! Please help me make a choice on a lens to buy. The only one I looked at was the 24-70mm but its a bit out of my price range.

Thank you

Get the Nikon 35mm f1.8..sorted. :)

The 50mm you borrowed 'becomes' a 75mm lens on your cropped sensor.
The 35mm is a DX lens (so designed for Nikon Cropped sensors).. it's a much less awkward length on the D300. It's also cheap at around £150..

Really depends on your budget, that will dictate any recommendations on here.

No doubt the Tamron 17-50 & 28-75 f2.8's will get the nod if it's a short zoom you're after.

The Tamron is a great bet. At normal apertures it's tack sharp.

Tamron 17-50mm is a good option. can consider a good 2nd handed Tokina 16-50mm.

I have the Tamron 28-75 and its pretty good, great value. Cant beat the 50mm or 35mm prime for IQ though.

I use a Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 for thoses type of shots. The IQ is excellent, you can pick them up second hand around £200-£250
