Mmmm, that's a good idea, Lee. Buy a really great camera and cripple it with cheap glass. I think you've got your priorities wrong.

Why buy something that won't do the job - it'll be wasted money in the long run.

If you must then why not just get a 2nd hand 18-55 VR and then sell it on for no loss later?

Get a Tamron 17-35 f/2.8 for £150 from Mifsuds
Buy a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 for £300 from anywhere.

Both are superb.

You could also try my manky Tamron 28-75 and if you don't like it, just post it back!

Also consider the Nikkor 28-105mm f/3.5-f/4.5 AF-D, thats superb.
Don't consider the 24-120 VR, thats really not good enough on full frame.

You don't need expensive Nikkors to make the D700 shine.

What is the budget for the lens?
Would you be happy with 2nd hand?

If you can stretch to £320 (+P&P), Ffordes are advertising the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 at the pre-increase price and may have one left. (Works very nicely on a D700 :D ) If you can't stretch quite that far, Mifsuds have a Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 advertised second hand for £169 (again, +P&P). They also have an excellent, barely used Nikkor 24-120 VR but they want £400 (+P&P) for it. I can vouch for its condition since I traded it in with them a couple of weeks ago (pretty sure it's ex-mine) and went for the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 instead (from Jessops at their sale price soon after christmas). TBH, the Nikkor 24-120 isn't bad but is way more expensive than the faster, sharper Sigma (IMO).

Hi Nod - thanks for the heads up on these lens',funnily enough i've just ordered a D700 from Mifsuds and was talking to Matt about second hand lens'which i think might be the way for me to go in the short term, until ive saved a bit:)
I'll have a couple of lens' to start me off anyway.
Thanks again for your advice

Regards Lee.
