I have had Fast Raw Viewer on my computer for a while but struggle to get to grips with it. I want to use it to select/reject images and then import them to LR. I have tried selecting them with a tick, rating and colour coding them each time when I open LR from FRV the whole file opens and there is no indication of the selected files. This program is simple so someone please point me in the direction of what I am doing wrong.

You must be in grid view in FRV for it to open LR in the import window with "all" the selected files.

My guess is that you are selecting the files, but have the viewer window open with a single image and this is the file that is being opened n LR.

If not get back to me, and we can try and sort it out, but all my files are now culled through FRV before importing into LR, and this is the most obvious explanation. I sometimes forget, and end up with the same issue.

Thanks for your reply. I am in grid view. When I right click and select LR from the run program option all files open in LR with no indication of the ones I have highlighted ( colour or star) in FRV.
Should I be moving the files I have selected in FRV to a new folder then importing that folder into LR as a separate action?

Can you confirm if you are you talking about viewing the stars and colour tag in the LR import window, or after they have been imported.

I'm not sure I would expect to see the ratings and colour tag in the import window, but I've never paid any attention. It's not part of my import routine.

With me the ratings and colour tags are certainly visible in LR after the files have been imported into LR.

If this metadata isn't visible after import, this may well be related to how LR is handling the FRV XMP files.

My routine is to:

1. open the card in the card reader with FRV and select all the files I want to import,

2. import selected files into a temporary FRVImports folder.

3. Reassess these files with FRV. adding ratings and colour tags which FRV saves into an XMP file that it creates.

4. Send these files to Lightroom for import. I use the "move" option in the LR import to empty the temp FRVImport folder and move the files in my long-term, date-based file structure for my raws.

Purely FWIW and as no longer an LR user......

I use FRV to examine and cull my images but I don't grade them.

Only once so sorted will I open the folder in DxO PL i.e. I keep FRV actions separate from my post processing program usage.

NB I have found the developer of FRV very helpful with his answers to any questions arising, so if needed perhaps email the developer?

I suspect this issue is linked to how LR deals with XMP files before/during import. Does LR show the XMP data in the import window, or does it need to be imported into the database before LR will display it.

Such issues are the domain of the developer.......maybe he, if possible, can make the necessary code changes???

I suspect it's Adobe that needs to make the changes, if I'm right about what is happening

FRV is using the industry standard XMP files to exchange data, But LR primarily uses metadata stored in it's database, even if it makes a one off read of XMP data during import. You can force subsequent reads after import.

To see the metadata in the import window LR needs to read and display the XMP data before import, which I don't think it does - but I could be wrong. I'm not sure that it's up to Iliah to change the way LR works, even it was possible.

Having said that, I may just be misunderstanding how FRV and LR work. But equally, I'm not that sure why I would want to see the star ratings and/or colour tags at the LR import stage. When I send files from FRV to LR, everything I send I want to import with the rating or colour tags I gave the files in FRV.

I did a search and found this page. ..

This link in that thread that points to the manual with page 55 being the relevant one.

Thanks for your replies. I have just started again. Colour coded some images and star rated others. I then "selected" them in FRV and ran LR.
In LR all the images showed. After I had imported all images the colours and star rating is were visible.
It doesn't seem correct that all images are imported and not just the ones I selected in FRV.

In FRV how are you sending them to LR?

I can't go and check right now, but when I right click on the grid view, I get an option to send to LR, and there is a dialog that says something like "36 selected images". or 36 of 46 selected images and only the selected images appear in the LR import window.

I probably won't be able to check out the details until tomorrow, but with me, it's only the selected images that get sent to LR. The FRV manual is a little dense, but I've found it actually explains things pretty well, if I concentrate.

Can I add to my last email, and suggest you pay particular attention on the section in the manual about selecting images. FRV doesn't select images the way you expect it to (but you can changes it to conform with the "normal" behaviour).

I seem to remember when I first started to use FRV, I had problems thinking I had only selected a subset of images, but had actually selected all of them.

Thanks for your help. I think I have some serious reading to do!

It appears that after I have selected the images by rating or colour I have to move them to a "selected " folder which shows as a sub folder of the initial one. From that sub folder I can import just those images to LR. Simples!!
I think I need a few dry runs before I am let loose with OM pro capture on Safari!!

I'm 99% confident that you don't need to do this. Sending to LR should only send the selected images, with no need to create a "selected" folder.

I'll try and have a look tomorrow (but a bit busy tomorrow) and see if I can pass on more specific directions. Or I might try and work it out from the manual, which I have here on my ipad.

Further to last post

P64 of the manual (but mine might not be the same age as yours) there is a section on "operations with multiple files).

on P66 there is a screengrab of the dialog box when you right click on the grid and you can see it says "Process 1069 selected files" [my bold] with an option to "Run program" where you can select LR and send only the selected files to LR. I assume you have LR set up as an external progam in FRV

Thanks all, I appear to be getting there with your help.
I am at the stage where I select images with stars or colours then right click in FRV and run program.
LR opens and displays all images but only my chosen ones are actually imported. I will have a play tomorrow but think I have achieved what I wanted, with your help - thank you.

Good to hear you are getting it sorted. It's actually a much more powerful program than it first appears, but it's also a bit tricky at times.
