I have a Canon 1D MK IV and take every opportunity when I am not working to shoot the local drag hunt.

The issue I have is that for the jumps there is very little opportunity to pick up the horse and rider as they approach due to hedges, walls etc. I am shooting using AF Servo and motordrive, but find some shots are very soft - probably due to not having much time to focus as they come to the jump.

Is it possible to use the back focus button to lock the focus on the jump, and then to shoot as the horse and rider jump, then move back to the wall to pick up the next rider?

Any suggestions welcomed.

Thank you
Barry

Yes you can do that with back button focus. If you drop me your email add I will send you some info on the MkIV.

If I can pre focus on the jump then, setting a depth of field that will cover both horse and rider, I can then fire of some shots before moving the camera back to pick up the next rider.
With the drag hunt it all happens very quickly as the hounds and riders all pass through.
