HELP with filters please

Hi.

As some of you may already know I have just started out with photography and don't really know alot. but I am willing to learn.

I headed out earlier today to take a few shots of a waterfall not too far away from home. I had been told to use a ND8 filter but when I have used it there is no colour in my pictures they just seem brown.

can someone help me please..

What WB setting were you using?
Bit to much on the exposure aswell clipped highlights.
 
auto white balance mate one of the pictures came out mint on the same settings so it confused me.

I've had a similar problem with cokin filters - everything was pink!!!

You should be able to adjust in Photoshop if you have it. :)
 
The filter is giving a slight brown cast, which I think is normal??

Next time I would custom white balance, do you have a grey card or similar?
 
grey card ? i will play with the white balance as im going to go back there tomorrow once i understand what went wrong

As others say set up a custom WB and hold back the exposure, use your histogram.
 
Most neutral density filters are not actually neutral and the auto white balance can't cope.

You need to do a custom white balance by shooting a sheet of white paper with the filter on. Easy peesey. Handbook explains.
 
thanks hoopy ive just read through the handbook about white balance and filter use and its pretty simple.

like i say im just starting out and didnt know what went wrong.

If you shoot in raw you can just sort out the white balance when you get home. That said, it's obviously better to get it right at the time as you can check your shots, see if you need to do anything differently etc.
 
I have same question as DorsetDude. What make are they? I'm looking at getting some filters too and I've read a few places that Cokin filters leave a colour cast???
