help with film and digital photography club at my school please.

How many films do you need Halli? ( I am assuming you need B/W?) I also have chemicals etc, but I dont think the post will accept them.

If you need any cash contribution for top up etc - just give me a holler.
 
Easy boys, this is F&C, we're all friends in here remember. We're the nice part of the forum.

Alex has a point that it may not be easy teaching film practices to the generation of instant gratification but I think he misses the point that the kids may get real enjoyment out of something that is a completely alien way of doing things to them.

I usually limit the clubs to about 10 pupils, so would need about 15 or so to cover accidents/blunders. Any more kids and you start getting the kids who are only there for a) free childcare in the case of after school clubs or b) the kids who just want to stay in when it is a lunchtime club. I can easily hand pick 10 for the club from the kids who apply who I know will want to be there.

I got caught out by both a and b above when doing the school Podcast Radio station, and the club died a death :(

Exactly! It's all about the enjoyment. Clubs rarely have anything to do with direct teaching - that's what the timetabled lessons are for. ;)

These kids all have mobile phones with cameras (from about age 5) My 3 year old daughter has one of those kids digital cameras and she has worked out all of the features herself.

Over the past 5 years I've seen a massive change in the pupil's ICT skills. They are creating multimedia presentations in my Reception class that the Year 6 pupils were making 5 years ago.

Film will be something new, not something old.
 
I've got boxes of developing stuff I was collecting to fit out a darkroom I was going to build, most of it I got from ebay you are welcome to it. I work in schools in your area I think we have a job in Alnwick this summer I could bring up for you if you want.

I've just bought a complete dark room kit which had some part duplicated 3 times in places and have just been offered another complete dark room's worth of stuff!

What I was going to do is pick out the best bits of each and then I will have quite a bit of stuff spare including an enlarger, trays, timer, chemical bottles and at least one dev tank. There will be other things too but not sure what yet. As it is a school club I would be happy to donate it but we will need to find someone heading your way in maybe a couple of weeks as it is just too big to post!!

I might even have a roll of bulk film that I can let you have half of which would be ideal for the pin hole cameras.

Let me know if this will be useful!

I've got two enlargers from freecycle, so I should be OK in that respect.

What's bulk film? Is it just a big reel of film? Would I be able to wind it into an empty cannister if that is the case?

If the remaining stuff you have spare will fit in a box then I could arrange a courier to collect it if that is OK?

Yes, I can do that. I am going to collect the other stuff tomorrow and will be buying my first film a week on Monday. Then I will go through it all and work out which bits are spare. I have 4 dev tanks and a pile of trays a foot high already so there will be stuff for sure.
 
Halli, if you are going to get bulk film, you can then roll them in cannisters and use them in normal camera as well. I got a bulk film loader to load the films into cannisters, which I can post to you.Its a bloody heavy solid thing.
Also let me have your addy for the films - I have got 4 of them.

Halli, this would be absolutely ideal for a camera club. You could roll films with 10 pictures on each for a club session etc and save money on film. I'm getting my bulk loader tomorrow :thumbs:

Just resurrecting this thread as I'm planning on starting the club later this term.

Thank you to all of the people who have donated stuff for the club, it was unexpected and very well received - thank you very much.

I have managed to get a bulk film loader from freecycle (along with a load of antique/retro SLR cameras and some fantastic lenses (which I've already got adapters for my 400D :) )

Would anyone who offered stuff and have not got back to me please contact me if they are still willing.

Also, any idea where the cheapest place to source B&W bulk film from and is this the right stuff for chemicals?

That's a decent starter pack for developing black and white film, yep, though there are more economical developers out there than the ID-11 - if you're going to be messing around with short rolls of film, you'll go through ID-11 at a hell of a rate (it takes as much dev to cover 12 exposures in the spiral as it does 36 :shrug:) so I'd suggest something like this which will do up to 85 tanks worth (at 300ml a tank - std patterson tank dev'ing 1 roll of 35mm) - much more economical.

..but added knowledge about anything develops the brain and helps the human vocabulary in talking to people, discussions and so on........Knowledge is power.
 
Rodinal is the best value for money developer and its actually very good too. I bought a massive industrial size bottle of the stuff recently and can afford to send you a 125ml bottle which will last a very long time.

Hi,

Have you thought of a biscuit tin with photo paper in the back, unload in a dark(ish)room and drop into print dev in a tray, then everyone could watch it appear, would be negative I suppose but as an intro ......

I think the one I saw had a large (1/2in) hole cut in the centre then tin foil glued over this and a hole poked in the tin foil with a needle.

On another tack how about a Camera Obscura ?

If you have a room with windows with a wall opposite and some imagination http://www.funsci.com/fun3_en/sky/sky.htm, not sure you have enough light up there though :)

making prints is something we are going to venture into :thumbs:, but the camera obscura idea is a no-go as we don't have any rooms that are dark enough. Shame as it is an idea I fancied trying.
 
How many refillable film cassettes have you got? I have nearly 40 of them here if you need a few.

Also would 200 YARDS of 4" wide developing paper be useful. Should be enough for several thousand 6x4 prints or panos. I have 2 rolls so I can let you have the one that is started. too. I also can let you have 1 patterson tank. There will be more stuff to come but I am still working my way through it all. You don't want an enlarger do you?

I have no refillable film cassettes, so would love some thank you. I've got two enlargers (freecycle! :) ) had another one but I wouldn't dare plug it in as it looked ancient and moth eaten!

The paper would be fantastic, cheers!
 
Did anyone have some advice as to where to get the bulk roll black and white film from?

Also, which speed of film would be best for use in the matchbox pinhole cameras and the 35mm SLRs I've collected from freecycle for general use? (probably mostly outdoors)

Ujjwal has kindly sorted me out with some rolls of Black and white film for the time being, but I would like to buy some bulk roll so I can load the cassettes that cowasaki is sending (meaning the kids won't need to wait to finish a whole roll when they are experimenting and it should be more economical)

Next question (I feel I will have hundreds over the next few weeks!!) Is it possible to wind cut sections of film into a developing tank (ie. wind one strip of about 6-10" onto the drum, and then another behind it on the same drum), or do you just have to use single lengths? All of the demonstration youtube videos I've looked at have just concentrated on developing one roll of film.
 
FP4+ bulk at bottom of page. I use 100-125 ISO film in my pinhole camera regularly, and it seems to work okay.

I've wound 2 rolls of 120 film into the same spiral with no problems - I think it may get a bit faffy and messy if you were winding 15 off 2 frame lengths, but i'd not worry about putting 3 x 12 frames in a spiral personally. Get a scrap roll of film and try it, is the best advice - first in daylight, with the spiral in plain view, then with your eyes closed
, then in a changing bag. Examine the spool, making sure that none of the film clips have "jumped the spiral" and come into contact with the film inside or outside of 'em. Remember, the more bits are in there, the more disappointed kids you could have, s make sure you can do it 10/10 times before even thinking about doing it with a live film.

Length of ruined film to practice with.....

Will add the roll of 4" paper later and either send today on more likely Monday.....

Problem is with the taller tanks john-oh - is they use 300ml of chemicals per spiral that's in there - the whole idea of loading multiple film clips into one spiral is to economise on chemicals - in a commercial environment, where you had 8 rolls of 36 shot to process they're fine (and provide a great workout lifting the tank for inversions with 2 1/2 litres of dev. in there :lol:) but if the OP has say 12 sets of 3 frame long film from matchbox pinhole cameras to process, it's an awful waste of good dev. to load it (say) 2 up into 6 spirals.
