Can somebody please tell me how to move my lightroom catologue on to an external hard drive? I have a P.C. running windows XP and my lightroom catologue is currently empty, as I've been saving my raw files on discs while waitng for my new external drive to arrive in the post.
Well it arrived today; and I'd like to now put all my raw files into a lightroom catologue BUT on my new external drive.
Any help will be much appreciated as it's driving me nuts!

Apologies if I have misunderstood something and have to say I don't know what is a Lightroom catalogue, but I would have thought you would put all you photos in the LR catalogue on the hard drive in your PC and then back that up to the external hard drive.

Sorry if I have the wrong end of the stick.

Are you wanting to move your photos to the external hard drive or just your catalog of thos photos?

If it's the former then you can use LR3 to "move" the photos when you import the details into your catalog.

Essentially it will take the photo from its existing location and move it to your external drive then it will catalog the photo in question to record that it is stored on your ext drive.

Once you have done this for all your photos you should have your complete folders of all your photos on the external drive and at this point I would take a back up to another drive.

I have all my photos on an external drive and also have the catalog on that drive so that I can open it on either of my two laptops!

Hope this helps

Buck, that's exactly what I want to do - but's it's ok now as I've worked it out. All I had to do was apply myself and stop trying to rush things. It was very obvious and easy once I slowed down.
Everything is the way I want it to be.

Excellent!

I had to do the same thing and as you say, sitting back and thinking what you want the end to look like helps clear the mind of how to do it!

Hope you enjoy LR3 - it's a good package
