I am a newbie to photograhphy and have a Nikon D80 and shoot all my photos in RAW.

Up until the build of my new computer and rebuild of laptop using Windows 7 Pro all was OK, as I was using Picasa to upload all my photos.

However since downloading latest version of Picasa, I can no longer see my photos when connecting camera to either computer after 'Googling' it appears to be a Picasa issue with NEF files not being recognised. Has anyone had the same problem?

Google/Picasa are working on this but this does not help me.

I am now looking at software and completely lost with the choice:bang:

Elements 9
CS5
Lightroom

What do you use?

Can someone offer some sensible advice? Many thanks:help:

I use NX2 and View NX2, with Trnasfer to import files, mainly as they treat Nikon Raws as they should. Best bang for buck I would say would be Elements 8 or 9, just a scaled down version of Photoshop but at an affordable price.

You can get a month free trial on the full PE 9 from the Adobe website.
I have used PE for some years; didn't bother with 8, but 9 has some useful imports from its big brother.
Using the trial at the moment - will have to pay for it soon !

PS: no problems with NEF files !

All of the applications you mentioned you can have free 30 day trials to see how you like them.

If you want to process each image to perfection - Photoshop CS5 or if you don't want to spend the cost of a decent lens - Elements 9.

If you want to process lots of images quickly there is Lightroom, which is priced in the middle.

Picassa see's nef's just fine, I suspect it's just not detecting the card reader/camera, if you manually download the images to PC does it see them then?

Def try this. I normally import using Picassa but it has not been seeing any RAW files on the camera since a recent update. Use windows to browse to the camera/card and copy them across to a folder, Picassa should then pick them up.

Try some of the freebies first - if you don't like them you have lost nothing.

Eg,. Photoscape, Irfanview, Silkypix or GIMP.
