Could anyone please recommend a program so i can convert DVD files to WMA files to use on a portable hard drive to playback on a netbook, i know i need to convert to WMV file's so i can use windows media player, so what software would i need ? i just want to add these are DVD,s which i have purchased from a shop myself, and would be only used for my own personal use, for travelling purposes, ie trains and planes, so i think copyright should be ok, however if mods think this isn't appropriate to post here, i guess they will delete, many thanks in advance :)

short answer yes unless the disc has DRM protection on it

slightly longer answer, there is lots of free software that can do this

even longer answer - whether this is legal or not is a discussion for another forum

but as you say, if the mods delete, then we'll know they don't want the discussion here!

Thanks, what is DRM protection, and could you please point me to what free software is available :)

...I use dvd-wmv to put my dvds onto an Archos7.

Wmv format as a result so are played in windows media player which you should have on your netbook assuming its windows :)

That sounds just like the type of thing i'm after, could you tell me which program you use, as there several out there, thanks :)

DRM - Digital Rights Management. Basically copy protection on DVDs to attempt to stop you backing them up.
It's not illegal to backup a DVD though per say, so this thread should remain open. There are loads of tools to do this so try google for "DVD to ###" replace the ### with a format of your choice, say wmv/avi.

You say DVD file. Do you mean you have already ripped these DVD's so that now you have the VOB files or are you talking about turning the actual DVD disks to wmv files?

No i haven't ripped them to my PC, so i need a program to do this, and or convert to WMV at the same time, hope that makes sense :) i'm not that computer literate with this type of thing.

First you need to decrypt the DVD then you can use software to take the VOB files and then convert them to the format you want. There are a load of tuorials out there on how to do this and what software tools you will need to do it.

Unlkess you are a techy, I'd take the easy way out and buy something like Movavi which will do the job for you. This page has links to 3 popular products. Expect to pay around $30.

Grab the .vob files from the DVD, they are usually in VIDEO_TS, and that's all you need.
You will need a player capable of playing these files. The link below leads to downloads and the player.

There's no need to waste time re-encoding, and money.
If you have trouble, download additional codecs from www.codecguide.com

There's also the possibility of converting your dvds into something else than wmv if it's an option for you. Xvid gives good quality and it's easy to play for slower computers.

Try going to softpedia and search for dvd rip or dvd backup there. You should be able to filter out the freeware ones there as well.

Drag them to WMP, and they will play.

Good point, but you'll still have a bunch of pretty big files. If you don't want to re-encode them, you can try simply joining them using a free mpeg joining program. SUPER can do this too.

What about encryption on the disk? Are some not copy protected?

Here's an example of what I mean taken from the first disk that came to hand using your method:

Excellent! What did you do?

I got a program called DVD43 from HERE, it seems to work fine, it just sits in the background, then when you put a DVD into the drive it automatically decrypts it without you doing anything, then i got a DVD to WMV program from HERE for about £6 it works fine, but it only seems to convert DVD to WMV and nothing else, still i guess that's all i wanted it for, the other programs cost about £30ish so i went for this one, anyway both seem ok at the moment :)
