can someone please give me some advice on set up for collisions, i.e how to drop the droplets in time to create the collision?!

im not so bothered about the camera side of things, i spent 3 hour yesterday trying and got so frustrated!

thanks, matt

I use a small airline tap from an aquatics shop, can control the droplets very well with this.

For collisions the drops are almost a complete stream, this is obviously difficult to control. To combat this use a jug or similar under the flow of drops, alow to water below to settle, remove jug and take shot etc etc.

thanks for the reply rob. so how do you get the water or whatever you use to flow through the piping? dont really understand the airline tap bit!

You actually have a tutorial on the forum directly aimed at this type of photography  that can be found HERE

Also this thread was posted in the last day or so with high speed footage of collisions to give you an idea as to what is going to happen  that thread is HERE

This has actually been posted in a photo critique and sharing section only so I'm going to suggest that this thread is moved to a more appropriate section of the forum

You need to ensure the drops are always constant. Try a Marriot syphon to do this, really easy to make and once you've got it working it will allow you to regulate the drip speed which from my experience is about 10 a second from 500mm.

It may also help if you told us the problem?

thanks rob and steve, i had read the tutorial which is very good but it doesnt go into too much detail about the actual airline valve and tubing which is the part i didnt understand too well. :bonk: (the actual setup). iv just ordered myself some tubing and a valve anyway so will give it a try when they come!

rob, is there any chance you could post a couple of pics of just your setup with the valve and tubing if you get time mate please? (sorry to be a pain!)

i posted my query on here purely beacuse the creative section is the one where the people who do collisions post and comment and thought id get more feedback. sorry! :bonk:

What flash are you using?

I understand the logic of why you posted it there  but that section is photo's only  that why I suggested the move we have this entire section dedicated to talking about photography  nothing personal

This thread has some images of my very basic setup from a few months ago it may help you to see how the water is syphoned down towards the valve.
I'd also be interested to see others set ups as I'm always trying to improve my own. http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=313820

thanks a lot dale, thats the kind of image i was after of the setup, just couldnt get my head round it. will wait for my kit to come now and give it a try! im guessing you just turn the tap to control the frequency of drops? (sounds easy lol)

iv heard people say they use rinse aid too to make the drop fluid more viscous, how does this affect the drops and does it make it easier to achieve collisions???

I already answered that question and it has nothing to do with a tap! Sounds to me that you're more interested in getting a pretty picture of the set up than actually achieving collisions

Good luck

What flash are you using?

I also posted the above, the flash is the most important bit! Why did you bother asking for help if you don't want it?

I can't be arsed any more!

why would i just want a pretty picture of the setup?!! like i said, i requested a picture of the setup because i couldnt quite get my head around how to do it, seriously whats your problem!!? if i didnt want help i wouldnt have asked in the first place!

Yes I have a problem....

You asked a question and I tried to help by giving a suggestion which you either didn't understand or ignored! and then you asked the question again.

However, I think I over reacted! As I said good luck with the drops.

i asked again because until i saw the images that dale put up i didnt even know what an airline valve/tap was! i didnt know if you just allowed the water to drip out of the end of the tubing or what, thats what i didnt understand, i have no experience with collisions or with a setup like this so im sorry if you thought i was ignoring you or whatever but some people on talk are new to photography or to aspects of photography and sometimes a simple photograph is easier to understand. thanks anyway.

No worries :) I realise that some are new to this and that's why I was trying to help. Please feel free to ask what you like as that is why we are all here

The easiest way to control the drips is with the mariotte syphon method I posted earlier and costs about £3 to make. The best nozzle for dripping that I found was those used with the baking piping bag things... again just a few quid. Valves can bought at any pet shop that sell aquarium stuff

I use the airline posted in the link somewhere in the thread. It's only a few £ and works great. I set mine up with a 2 litre bottle of water at worktop height. From there I have the tubing in the bottle down to the valve that I have below the bottle. To get the water to flow you need to suck the water through the tubing and it will keep flowing as long as the valve is below the bottle. Then it's a case of putting your valve in place. I use a small tripod above my bowl of water. And adjust the valve to see how the drips come out.

Yup! That will work :) .... But how do you control the speed of the drops and are you getting the collisions? When the water volume gets less then the drips speed will change. If you control the air pressure then the drops will always be the same, adjust the pressure to regulate drip times

ok steve, thanks mate. thanks derek,
just got my airline tap/valve through so just need to wait for the tubing now and have a little play, i'll be sure to ask if im struggling!

btw, what does the rinse aid do?

Reduces viscosity and makes the water splashier... Actually breaks down surface tension in the water.
