Help with collections in Lightroom 4

I have set up a collection set and put the same photos into 2 different collections within the set. I am using different edits in both sets but when I edit one set when I go to other set the images have changed to this style. Am i doing something really silly?
Any help will be very gratefully received :)
 
A collection is just a "path" to the original as edited in your main folder. If you want different edits in different collections, create virtual copies then edit them as you wish. Then send each differently edited virtual copy to its respective collection.

Does that make sense?

It does make sense thanks. I seem to be doing things arse from elbow - excuse the language.

Can I get this clear in my head? Once I have put all the images from one shoot into a collection set I should make virtual copies of the keepers, edit them into eg b& w and colour, and then put them into different collections?

That will work yes. The nice thing is that despite having 3 different versions of the file, you actually don't take up 3 times the space on your hard drive as those copies are only virtual. The changes exist only in the Lightroom Catalog.

Thanks for your help. This has been driving me nuts for last couple of evenings
 
Can I make a collection easily with just the virtual copies in it? Any help gratefully received
