I currently own a Canon 500D and really want to upgrade to a body that is much better. I'm currently mainly focused on aviation photography and sometimes landscapes, however, I'm torn between 3 bodies!

The first one I'm considering is the Canon 5D Mark IV as it will be compatible with some lenses I already have and ones I would want to get in the future.

The 2nd and 3rd would be the new soon to be released Canon EOS R6 and R5. I really don't need the use of the video capabilities from all these cameras, only stills so the R6 would probably be the better option and also the cost would be better too, however, with the new RF mount I don't fancy having to spend a lot of money on top of the body for the new lenses.

My conclusion would therefore be I go for the 5D Mark IV, what would others suggest?

Hi Nath

Having recently bought a camera myself, getting one that would fit the lenses I already own was a high priority for me, so would agree with your assessment. However, do adaptor rings exist to convert your present lenses to the newer cameras? Something I didn't think off at the time I bought mine.

The 5Dmkiv. Tried and tested, no adaptors, long battery life. I am not sure how well the EVF copes with panning shots, hopefully someone will test that and report. It’s excellent value for money especially as loads of 5Dmkiv users will be upgrading. There is a huge range of lenses from Canon and third party manufacturers for the EF mount, brand new and second hand.

If you have EF lenses, they'll work as well with the RF mount as they do on a 5dIV, the adaptor is required to move the lens away from the sensor.

As you've given no clues why you want to upgrade though, it's impossible to advise which route would be best.

All that said - if I had the cash available for the R5 I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

With both RF you can use EF lenses with adaptor and if the lens has IS get up-to 8x IS. The only shame for me was they didnt put a higher MB sensor in the R6. Also with mirrorless get the option of mechanical shutter or electronic.

I think you’ve answered your own question there (y)

I personally like the look of the R5, the AF capabilities look staggering, but it’s not cheap.

The R6 has exactly the same af, might as well save a fortune.

One thing to bear in mind, which you've alluded to is your existing lenses.
From "Canon 5D Mark IV as it will be compatible with some lenses I already have" I assume you have a mixture of EF & EF-S lenses.
The EF-R adapter also adapts EF-S to R, so the R5 or R6 would allow you to use all of your existing lenses.

That’s interesting thanks I didn’t realise that I also have a mixture of EF and EFs lenses I assume that I would get vignetting tho if for example I used my Tokina 11-16 on the R6

Nope, the camera auto crops the sensor to apsc when it detects efs via adapter. Only difference is a megapixel drop. So 30mp eos r will crop to 12mp, rp is 10mp. This is very useful because you can also activate the crop on a EF lens at any time so you're live viewing/framing and cropping to apsc without going into lightroom.

I think the 11-16 behaves quite well at 15mm even on a ff sensor.

Just to convince my better half that I need a new camera but will start saving :)
