I have recently bought this remote off ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/wireless-remo...raphy_DigitalCamAccess_RL&hash=item19c2ad222d

It seems to work, the reciever will take a photo but the remote won't work, it lights up green, then red but nothing happens to the camera. I've tried it on self timer, without self timer etc and it does nothing to the camera. the instructions are in terrible english and make no sense at all. i emailed the seller and he told me to ask someone who knows how to work a camera, which I do but it seems to not be working. Does anyone have this remote or know why its being a pain in the ass? any help would be great!!

The ad says there are 16 channels, are there any switches on the remote or receiver to set the channel?
I don't think you need to do anything to the 40D to get it to work with a remote connected.

yes on the remote there is a B channel and another, i've tried both, neither work! I'm thinking of sending it back.

You don't. I use mine with a push button cable release and a home made intervalometer - all you should have to do is connect the release to the camera and it should just work.

If the button on the receiver will activate the shutter then you know that that part of the system is working ok. The next thing to check is as suggested above - that the transmitter and receiver are on the same channel.

Does the indicator LED on the transmitter light up when you press the button? If it doesn't then check to see that there's not a piece of plastic film to remove from the battery compartment. Some devices come with this to stop the battery from accidentally discharging. If it does light up then it's either a channel problem or it just isn't working.

If the seller won't play fair then raise a dispute as soon as possible.

The blurb on the site claims that there are 16 channels available... ;)

All the dip switches are set the same. Nothing is making the remote actually interact with the camera. Thanks for the help guys, I'll just send it back.

So the receiver works as a wired remote? That means it's plugged in ok at least.

And the transmitter flashes green when you press it? So that's turned on ok.

The dip switches on both the transmitter and receiver need to be set to the same as each other - it doesn't matter too much what you set them to, just that they're the same as each other.

Lastly, the receiver may need to be turned on to work wirelessly - when it's just used as a wired trigger it doesn't require any power but it needs a battery & to be turned on in order to work with the transmitter.

It looks like aversion of the Harma wireless remote. I have one and it works fine.

The trigger unit is always on. You have to switch the receiver on. Holding down the power button until the red light flashes. it should then blink. Holding the switch down turns it off. But as you can get it to work manually seems as though you have sussed that. Both the transmitter and receiver have 4 dip switches for channel selection. Check they are identical. The other point may be that the CR2 battery in the receiver may be a bit flat. OK to fire the camera but not enough juice to operate the receiver components. Try replacing it .
