We were just north of Oban last week and saw this little ariel duel. Still not entirely sure of the ID's of these two, despite having two bird books. So can anyone help out on ID?

I've not touched the file so please excuse the lump of sensor crud! (makes note to clean 20d again!)

Rear one is a buzzard....the front looks like a lapwing to me.. but perhaps not.

buzzard .... and a jack daw maybe

Deffo a Buzzard, but I think we need a blow up on the 2nd one if you can.

Crows often mob Buzzards, you would think that the Buzzard would easily despatch a Crow but essentially a Buzzard is a carrion eater and not a true bird of prey even if they do take the odd pheasant or two.

If a game keeper finds a dead bird the normal thing is to blame a Buzzard, however an Owl would do more damage but would only suck the brains out of a pheasant and leave the carcass then a Buzzard would be seen eating what an Owl had left behind and blamed for the kill.

While I'm at my local Airgun club we also see Buzzards 'worming' on the fields that have just been ploughed - a funny habit for a bird of prey ;)

The other bird looks like a Jackdaw to me too

Sorry to disagree but I am going with Hooded crow Or Huddie as we call em.

Hmmm ..actually it does look a bit big for a Jackdaw. :suspect:

OK Charlie - I'll give you this one. :D

Actually I am having another look.
Yes Hooded crow I am pretty certain

Crows often mob Buzzards

A few years back I was in Llandudno , a guy was flying a falcon on the seafront as part of a show when it flew into some trees, despite him flinging a bit of meat about on a rope the bird was having none of it, it took off from the trees and was immediately mobbed by a dozen or more seagulls.

It panicked and made for safety, problem was the safety it went for wasn't a cave which it probably looked like but a high up bedroom window which was closed

There was an almighty thud as it hit the glass then it fell about 20 feet onto a roof, the guy climbed up to get it and amazingly it was still alive but really dazed

I bet there are no more falconry shows in Llandudno

lts a hooded crow...all day long.

As spoken with determined conviction by my husband. Firstly, location of the shot, secondly, the size in relation to the buzzard. Thirdly, the markings. Jackdaw has a grey nape, as opposed to a grey chest.

We have a pond very near our large kitchen window, and a very busy bird population. Every spring we have many bird strikes on the window from new fledglings who use the pond to drink and bathe.

We usually just have greasy bird prints on the glass and a dazed bird, but sometimes they break their necks.

Poor things.

My money is on a Hooded Crow
