Hi guys.

Looking for a bit of help.

I've paid for a domain "philyoungpt.co.uk" with a company called wix but I need to build a website with a company that offers email included. Problem is - Wix doesn't offer email so I find it a bit of a pointless exercise to build a website with them...

How easy is it to use my domain with another company (website builder) - I've never done that before, the email has always been included...

Any help appreciated!

Phil.

Depends on the builder....you have to be careful because sometimes these site builder style hosts don't facilitate domain name transfers, also some don't even register the domain as yours.

Assuming they allow it and the domain name is in fact yours, you will need to find out who wix use as their domain name registrar and ask wix to "unlock" and allow the transfer. They may charge an admin fee for this.

Once you have done this you can go to another web site hosting company, give them the details of your domain and who it was registered with and they should do the rest.

S the tricky thing is just finding a decent provider who will offer what you need

Hope that helps

Just been reading up on wix
I assume from what you have said, you paid for a new domain when you signed up with them and that its not that you already have the domain registered elsewhere and then you linked it to your wix account

Assuming that is the case and having said all that i did in my last post, it does look like you can get email from another provider and link it to your wix hosted domain. It's just that they don't offer a mail service themselves

Read through this,
http://www.wix.com/support/main/html5/domains-email/setting-domain-purchased-wix

if its double-Dutch to you, see what mail services they support and ask them for non-tecchy guide!

Are you sure about Wix Phil?

I'm yet to be convinced that any genuinely successful websites have been built using them.

I tend to just by hosting and then do the design and coding work myself as I come from a computer science background
Whatever I might personally think about these types of services, I have to acknowledge for a lot of people they do make life easier
Whether Wix is one of the good ones I couldn't say

If you are running a business I would suggest you employ a local web design company to do a proper job, particularly if you want something unique that stands out from everything else.....

By the way, don't let anyone kid you that because they can code and understand the tech that they are good web site designers, they are different things....hence a company you pay to do it will have different people with different skills on the case and the result should be far more professional

I had someone design me a good website before...I could implement my old branding on wix if I wanted as the template that I used is pretty much gone now anyway and only Yves colour scheme remains.

Take a look and tell me what you think.

www.philyoungpt.co.uk

I like the ease of use and it looks a lot mkre professional than my other one which was more of a blog type page.

This one I have unlimited pages for articles etc and can even have people sign up to them :-)

What I really want to know is this;

How can I get an email of Phil@philyoungpt.co.uk???

Hi Phil - you really need to read through that last wix link I posted there is a section there about email setup
As I suggested if you aren't clear on this you need to contact wix for support.....but it is do-able from what I can see

I would move the domain to a host that offers email and allows Wordpress, preferably via a one-click install control panel. Then its just a question of getting a theme - plenty of serviceable free ones or premium theme at low cost and chucking some photos on it.

I did Chris, sorry I didn't reply.

I can't seem to get a third party supplier to host my domain - they all show it as unavailable.

I'll give them a call over the weekend and see if they can shed some light as to what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks.

And then lose the whole website I've built yes?

It will show as unavailable because when they look up your domain name they will see it already registered, that is because wix have done it for you

You should be able to update settings on your wix hosting that will effectively redirect email sent to info@philyoungpt.co.uk for example to info@myemailprovider.com

Ideally if you get an email account with one of the providers wix already support it's just a matter of selecting them from a drop down list on the appropriate settings page

I think your site looks pretty good by the way, I would want to keep it too :)

Cool hope you get it sorted

What do you mean by hijacking? This should not really happen if you keep you domain name registration up to date...unless you mean hacking? Which would not be a good advert for wix at all!

Viewing your site it seems fine to me

Are you saying these materials are being uploaded to your web space? If so change your password immediately and contact wix

If they are not able to resolve it fast, leave them

Hmmmm....I have to say googling about wix hacked sites does not fill me with a lot of confidence about wix themselves

I can't see them having actually directly answered or resolved anyone's issues in their support forums
They basically say, "we are secure. If your site is hacked it is because you have given up your password somehow or left yourself logged in on a public computer. Only thing we can do is restore your site to a point X days ago. Does it look ok now? Yes, ok it's fixed"
......er no! fixing it would be making it more secure to not being hacked in the future and crediting users with some sense of intelligence about password security (although admittedly not everyone is sensible about that!)

Sounds more like flaky shared hosting to me and you are picking up someone else's sites.

Yes when I googled their contact details it seems a bit of a shambolic operation.

So basically if I get any problems....I have to deal with it myself...great.

That makes total sense....should I be worried about it?

Only from the point of view that it demonstrates poor hosting and the likelihood of annoying issues in the future ... it's unreliable hosting and my advice would be to move.
From your description of the 'faults' I would very much doubt that this is a hacking attack on your website.

I had a WIX.com site for a while but wasn't totally convinced on their templates and a great deal of them are Flash based so in the end I got a host with an SQL data base + Word press template.

I find it easier to manage now.

Had issues with wix trying to view it with Interent explorer too

Haven't had that problem myself...I find it quite useful but I can appreciate why you may not have liked the layout.
