Hi..i am a complete newcomer to dlsr and really photography in general...i just love taking photos tho'...used to have a compact...i have a canon 400d..and my sons have recently bought me a new macro lens...60mm....any tips on using it would be much appreciated...
i shall be taking a course at evening class at the end of september so would like some decent photos to show when i do!!

Hello! :wave: welcome to TP, I'm sorry I'm not really qualified to give advice :shrug: I would suggest experimenting and see what happens. There's quite a lot of techie stuff in these threads that might give you some ideas and inspiration.

I have the EFS 60mm, got it a few weeks ago, and my 400d a few weeks before that.

Start out with on shutter priority f/11 and go down to f/9 keep shutter speeds in the range of 1/125 to 1/200.
Use the flash but try and diffuse the it. (kitchen roll over the flash with cellotape).

once you get the feel for it try on manual.

I have just got the EF12 extension tube for my lens, just to get that bit closer to subject.

Hi...thanks for the advice (I welcome any advice)...i shall take on board what you say and certainly try it - i must admit i am feeling a little overwhelmedby everything that has to be remembered!....later on in the month i shall be going to a local indian festival which sounds as if it will be colourful - any tips....should i use the manual focus?....thanks again..jackie
 
No.... personally I'd keep it on auto-focus, but learn how to use the various auto-focus points in the frame, and also, how to hold the focus on one subject then move the frame slightly and take the pic - which often produces interesting results.

Most importantly - bite the bullet and get some of your pics posted on here. There's a super gallery function you can use to host your images, or if you want a little more space perhaps try www.photobucket.com - you can then easily show your images on here.

As someone before me has said, you got the gear, now take those pics :)

on macro shots of static subject i.e flowers, use manual focus. also use tripod and remote shutter releaso or timer and lock the mirror up.

on moving subjects set the focus mode to Auto AI Focus.


I have probs with this lens on prtrait shots, it can go a bit soft focus on parts of the subject if you are not carefull.
 
hi...i feel rather stupid saying this but when i tried your settings...i.e...f11 & 1/125 ....as i changed one setting the other altered (if you know what i mean)!....please help...j...(i feel as if i should know how to do this)!

you need to set the camera to manual M mode.
