Hi all,

I've decided that this is the year that I want to get more work, and to do that I want to have a camera that I can be comfortable will cope with anything.

So I'm going to splurge my cash on a 5D, and possibly a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 SP Di as from the reviews I've read, they are very impressive. L glass will follow in time, but unless I can bag something impressive s/h then it'll have to wait.

Now. I live just round the corner from Digital Depot so their current price of £1249 looks about average, but I hear cashback promos are on their way on 1st March.

That said, I'm also off to Focus on Imaging - has anyone who has been before got any advice on whether the deals will be any good? My experience with other trade shows is that show prices are about comparative to internet prices...

Thanks in advance - any particular suggestions are welcome!

Cheers,
James

Kerso is quoting a lot less than that
and it is alleged that the cash-backs are acoming - 1st March

And you'll get that if you buy from Ian (kerso)

to do that I want to have a camera that I can be comfortable will cope with anything.

I would seriously consider whether the 5D is that camera. I use mine quite a bit for client work these days and for jobs that only require small files, the quality is OK.

I wouldn't want to take it anywhere though without a 1 series in the bag to fall back on and get the job done if it all goes a bit nasty.

Interesting stuff Dazza, can you expand a bit...what exactly do you find lacking in the 5D?

Bearing in mind my 'pro' stuff is using a 20D/30D, the 5D will be my own, personal, camera so I'm keen to try full frame - would you consider a used 1Ds mk1 any better as that's also in my budget.

Cheers,
James

When I needed a FF canon in a bit of a hurry for a job, I went and bought a 5D. The image quality IS really good but having been used to using my 1D II it just always feels a bit lacking in build. The sound and feel of a 1 camera is VERY reassuring somehow.

I do wish I'd have had the time to think and look a little more as I'm 99% sure I'd have ended up with a 1Ds I.

Well you should have been watching when I sold mine:lol::lol:
Will have the mk 3 in a couple of days, and can't wait to see how bad the autofocus is.......

I was, VERY closely! Despite the fact that I already had the 5. ;)

cashback tends to mean upgrades on the way!... or possibly not :bang: so, if you contact kerso direct he tends to do a better price than advertised i.e. on ebay?

If you're going for a 5D I would extend it further and invest in some L glass. Whilst the Tamron is a good lens, I've heard the 5D (full frame) will show its flaws. Just some thought.

i heard a rumour that the 5D's replacment may be announced for FOI ;)

I'd be surprised...if they were going to drop a bombshell like that, you'd expect it at PMA. Canon are there, but I think we've had the new models for a few months yet.

Cheers,
James

I've been having a good think, and I'm certain I want to go for a 5D, not its replacement (as my budget is tight, and any difference will be spent on glass) and not a 1Ds Mk1. Whilst the 1D series are amazing cameras they are too conspicuous for me and I'd prefer to look like the average Joe with his consumer dSLR and attract less attention.

I've emailled Kerso, but in common with everyone else haven't heard back so I guess he's sick/on holiday. I'd still rather buy from Digital Depot purely as they are so close but I don't think they'd price match him as technically the camera would be a grey import?

Cheers,
James

no, kerso's things usually hold up to cashbacks...search around here and you'll see people have got their money back after buying from him

And he stands by the Canon worldwide warranty.

George, I dont know where your getting your info but there is nothing wrong with the autofocus on the 1Dsmk3 , its the 1Dmk3 which is having problems.

Hmmm, may have to wait for the man himself to return from his sojourn...

I guess I'll see what FOI brings on Monday - can't wait!

Cheers,
James

Careful! ... Canon only offer a worldwide warranty on lenses. For cameras it's country-specific or continent-specific, which might be an issue since Kerso brings in his stuff from the USA.

Mark, I am under the impression it's the same system in both cameras? PS..Did you send the cheque?

Ian has said that he'll give a 1 yr warranty if there are any problems.

No they are slightly different, from what my mate at canon has told me, the main problem wih the 1Dsmk3, is some have a viewfinder alignment problem (very slight) a trip to the service centre sorted mine in about 15 mins.

The main problem I have found with it is that it shows the flaws up in the 17-40 f4, which the 1Dsmk2 and 5D dont show.

The detail, in pics is outstanding.

do tell - I'm not aware of probs with that lens?

Mark, which service centre did you use (with apologies to mmcp42 for slight thread hi jacking!!)

At this point if I was going to buy a 5D, I would be looking at second hand and not new. I have seen quite a few go for around £800 over the last couple of months, both privately, and also through the usual second hand channels.

@Moos3h: As for image quality, I have never had any complaints from anyone of image quality, so if you want to get it for your magazine work, you should not have any problems up to double page spreads. But keep in mind that I have spoken to editors who have seen some terible shots from a 5D, so it is down to the operator.

As for handling, it is true that it is not as good as a 1 series, and I do enjoy using the 1D2 more then the 5 most of the time, but then the 1 stop worse noise performance also means that I use the 5 more then the 1D2.

I would also strongly sugest you get a Canon 28-70 F2.8 over the Tamron. Especially considering that you can find the Canon quite regularly at the usual second hand places for quite reasonable prices.

@mmcp42: The 17-40 F4 has never been that great a lens. Though for the price it is quite ok. The problem with Canon is that there are no really good lenses in the wide end (unless you get a really good copy of the 24 F1.4), but once you have tried a couple of other lenses (from the cheap Olympus OM, to the Legend that is the 21 Distagon, and even the Nikon 14-24 F2.8), you can see that even on a 5D, there are alot of lenses better then the 17-40 F4.

Hi,

there is a 5D for sale over at the Canon Forums, don't know anything about the seller but might be worth a look.

HERE

Mike.

I'm happy to consider secondhand, but at £950 for that one, vs. £1150 (approx) for a £150 cashback 5D, I think I'd spend the extra to get a warranty.

I'm happy to go s/h on a 24-70 though, if anyone spots one for a good price I'd be chuffed to get a heads up!

Cheers,
James

Haggle?

Mike.

there are no problems with that lens just that 21mp and digic 3 (14 bits) starts to show how crap the lens actually is at resolving detail, even when stopped down over its range.

this wasnt apparent on the 5D or 1dsmk2 where a lot of people prefered it over the 16-35 2.8 mk1.

A superb wide lens is the 14mm 2.8 L its outstanding

cheers!
