Help - Smashed laptop screen !!!

On Thursday I managed to let my laptop slip off the bed onto the floor, didn't think there was a problem as it was still running.
When I picked it up and opened the screen is bust, still lights up etc just odd pretty patterns all over it and blank white bits :(
waiting to hear from the insurance company, but despite me being good at backing up most things I have a months pictures on there and I would like to get my email contacts and the emails themselves off it as they contain many of my sign in details for various things.
Have bee told I can just plug an external monitor in and it should work or alternatively as I have an hd tv this is a possibilty andyone know and also what connector I would need for the tv.
Really mife as it's a sony vaio and been really good, not had many problems with, only just 2 years old :'( I am considering seeing if it can be fixed but think that might be a bit expensive !!

Oh and for the record I HATE WINDOWS 7, bring back Vista
 
Connector depends on output plugs on your lappy what model is it?
 
About £70 for a new screen, 20 minute job to fix. Easy as pie. Just undo a few screws, unplug the ribbon connector and take the old screen out, reverse to put the new one in.

Depending on the size of the screen £70 should be about spot on, plus £70-80 to get it fixed at your local computer shop if you don't want to do it yourself.

All in you should be looking at about £150-160, and depending on the availability of the screen in the UK it should only take a day or so, so it is definitely worth getting it repaired.

As for the TV connection, it depends on what sockets you have on both pieces of kit. It's likely to have an HDMI, but I doubt that the Vaio has. Likewise a DVI, but again only the top spec Sony's seem to have those.

The Vaio will have a VGA output, but whether your TV does is another matter.
 
Same thing happened to me last year. Got a brand new screen on ebay for £100, took about 1/2 to do the swap over. Here is who I got mine from Linky

Mine was the 13.3" which seem to be more expensive than the 15" ones.

It really is a simple job to do, maybe a bit fiddly but certianly not technical. As long as you are carefull, there isnt much that can go wrong.
 
Oh wow mou guys have made feel really hopeful, have to wait and see what the insurance company say but at least it seeems I get to keep my photos etc.

Ingrid if your insurance company offer to repair it don't part with it until you get the stuff you want off the hard drive. My advice it take it to a local independent computer store who offer repairs and ask them to transfer the contents of the HDD onto an external HDD. If it goes away for a new screen it will probably come back reset to factory settings and the content will be lost. They may offer a new replacement model as settlement, do you have new for old and is the laptop covered?

I hope it works out OK for you...BUT the fact that it was running when it was dropped may mean the HDD has crashed, depends on which model some Vaios have drop protection. If you are unsure don't mess about get it to a dependable repairer who can tell you exactly what the problem is.
 
Ingrid, your photo's aren't at risk here. Your options:

Connect a monitor or TV to back them up
Replace the screen in the laptop.
Buy a new laptop, an external drive housing and put your current HDD into the housing. Once you've recovered all the files you need onto your new laptop, format the old drive and use it for backups. Not only will it be a use for your old kit, it'll give you peace of mind in the future.
 
I think the hard drive is ok because when it starts up it does chaange on the parts of the screen that still work from black to the normal blue, just can't see the password box etc. will just have to hope for the best when I get to a monitor.
It didn't drop far but the screen was open and I thinl that took the brunt of the impact, hence it cracking up behind the proective glass,
 
well the good news is the hard drive is fine and now got everything I need off if :thumbs:
