HELP!!!: Sigma 70-200 OS focus issue

Hi, I've just come home from shooting the lad at his pre-school sports day and part way through getting a few shots for the school my lens went bananas.

I back focus on the above lens attached to a Nikon D3 and it seems to focus and then search/hunt back and forth quite violently as if in low light. I've tried it with OS on 1/2 and off- tried to switch in and out of manual focus, starting at close range to focus at distance and vice versa and the problem still occurs.


Its not been dropped and the focus/zoom ring operate smoothly, one thing to note however is that when pointed down the jittering focus does seem to move the zoom ring.

Any ideas anyone?
 
Is the camera OK with other lenses? It sounds as if its getting random instructions from the camera rather than normal hunting if its doing it quite violently?
 
Never seen that before! How old is it and have you registered for the three year warranty? I'd certainly get it looked at.
 
Spoken to a bloke in LCE and he reckons its the motor, had to just bite the bullet and replace it as need it tomorrow & Saturday- typical. It was a few years old now, well out of any warranty.
