Hi guy's got a problem with my D300,went to the Marwell Zoo TP meet today was'nt particularly warm probably about 7/8 degree's within 5 minutes my camera refused to Auto focus checked all the usual settings ect nothing out of the ordinary whatever i done it would'nt A/F had to use it in manual which is'nt much fun trying to take shots of animals.Anyway used my backup D80 no problems.
When i got home i went through all the settings again could'nt really find anything wrong but then A/F just started working again,this got me thinking could it be a temperature related problem,so i tried leaving the camera outside for approximately 10 mins temperature probably approx 4/5 degrees so not overly cold and sure enough A/F stopped working again seems to also happen when the camera is tilted back is there a mercury switch in the D300?
Any idea what this could be ?i'm pretty sure it's gonna have to back to Nikon but i'd like to get some info if anyone could help.

The only thing I have done before is accidently catch the focus switch on the front just below the lens release button. Its very easy to flick it onto manual without realising. It doesnt sound like your problem though....:thinking: I have had this problem with the 70-200mm fitted and a converter on. it was a contact problem between converter and lens..

Yep tried 5 different lens' camera works fine when its warm put it outside for 10 mins bring it back in tilt it back and take a shot and A/F stops working, let it get back to room temp and it' OK again:thinking:

No that was one of the 1st things i checked easy to catch the focus switch,
this happened before i mounted the T/C,tried my 17-55 and nifty fifty and still no A/F working once i got home and it warmed up itjust started working again i've tried putting it out in the cold twice with the same results:'(
 
Sounds like a fault, I have used a D200 in minus 20 without any real problems, except the battery not lasting very long. Wayne
 
What firmware have you loaded? Just wondering if its anything to do with the dead battery syndrome that the latest firmware upgrade helped to solve. Just stabbing in the dark now.

Looks like it'll be going to Nikon:(
Bought 2nd hand so i think i'll be stuffed on the warranty front:thumbsdown:
 
there's nothing loose is there, like the lens mounting to the body? have you tried moving the lens while its cold to see if the AF responds?
 
No tried that just moving the lens on the body,all contacts look ok and have been cleaned:shrug:

Just a thought, have you tried it with another battery? (a D80 or D200 one should fit)Wayne
 
Wish I could help you out but all seems to have been covered, does it have a clock battery like the d2/3 cameras that can be changed as my D2 went this way till I changed it??????????????
 
Hi Dangermouse have you any more info on this as i can't find anything in the manual,i've tried 2 other nikon batteries seems to be temp related and more so with the 70-200 VR lens :thinking:but A/F completely stops working not even hunting changing lens' makes no difference but at room temp i don't get a problem :thinking::shake:
 
What did the battery status readout in the menu (not the top lcd) say about condition?
 
Hi Mark battery condition in menu says new- 4
