Ive been shooting photos on my Canon A1 for about 4 years and never had a problem, however today the shutter stopped working and i cant roll the next frame on, its completely stuck, as if its jammed or something. i had to ruin the current roll to try and solve the problem.

has anyone had this problem before!?

Thanks so much for any help

battery is still working fine and there is a slight squeal..

Have you used the camera a lot? I hate to say it but perhaps the shutter has died. I'm not too sure though.

Ive used it loads! shot so much film on it over the past few years. shutter died aye, is that a common problem?

I think that I can help with this, as my spare, rough looking, A1 had exactly the same problem about 3 years ago. I fixed it by reading this thread and paying particular attention to what Andrew K said on page 2

I must admit that I was highly skeptical as to whether a wipe over with some lighter fluid on the magnet face would fix it, but it did and it's been OK ever since. All you have to remove is the bottom plate and snip that plastic shroud a bit to get access to the magnet face, there are no springs or other bits to fly out and lose. As it stands your camera is cocked and the shutter can be released by moving one of those levers as described by Andrew K.

Thanks so much for the response NickT. I've been out of the country for a month so i havent had a chance to fix the problem with my A1. Im going to browse now, thanks again

The squeal is the more commonly called "canon cough" which can be resolved with a CLA .....the squeak is a lubrication issue with the mirror mechanism hence why it's heard when you depress the shutter.

There are "diy" methods but tbh I'm not sure I would wish to go down that route having read the possible problems that can arise.

As to wether this is the cause of the shutter being completely jammed or not, I cannot be sure but it does sound like the camera could do with a proffessional service to restore it back to life.
